Battling Plastic Pollution: Addressing the Root Cause in Rivers

Plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, and the vast majority of it originates from rivers. These waterways, often seen as lifelines, have inadvertently become conduits for waste, carrying it from land to the oceans. Recent research reveals a startling fact: approximately 80% of riverine plastic pollution is contributed by just 1000 rivers worldwide.

Fighting the Plague: A Thousand Rivers, A Singular Goal

To combat the escalating plastic pollution crisis in our oceans, a multi-faceted approach is imperative. Cleaning up the existing plastic debris is only one part of the equation; preventing new plastic from entering our oceans is equally crucial. The task at hand is to shut the tap that feeds plastic into our water bodies. Collaborating with governments, individuals, and private entities, this mission revolves around addressing the 1000 rivers responsible for a substantial portion of plastic pollution globally.

Every year, marine plastic inflicts economic damage, ranging from $6 to $19 billion. This burden affects industries such as tourism, fisheries, aquaculture, and governmental clean-up efforts. The consequences ripple beyond economics, impacting public health and marine ecosystems. Intercepting plastic waste in rivers proves to be a cost-effective strategy compared to dealing with the far-reaching aftermath downstream.

Tailoring Solutions: Understanding the Complexity

The diversity of rivers poses unique challenges. Factors like width, depth, flow speed, debris composition, seasonality, and tides influence the efficacy of interventions. THEOCEANCLEANUP portfolio comprises a range of technology solutions, each tailored to different scenarios. These solutions, both high-tech and low-tech, adapt to the intricacies of each river. We continually explore novel methods on a case-by-case basis, expanding our arsenal of solutions.

1. Interceptor Original: Engineering Excellence

The Interceptor Original, the pioneering river cleanup technology, is a testament to engineering ingenuity. This high-tech solution integrates solar-powered mechanics, smart processing, and connectivity for streamlined performance tracking. It’s designed for mass production, marked by a collaboration with Konecranes for manufacturing expansion. Autonomy and impressive cleaning capacity make it the primary technology for assessing feasibility in new river projects. Presently deployed in five locations worldwide (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, and California, USA), it embodies a commitment to excellence.

2. Interceptor Barrier: A Strategic Barricade

The Interceptor Barrier is a standalone floating solution, forming a U-shaped barricade at the mouth of smaller rivers. It captures and contains debris until removal. Leveraging experience from the Interceptor deployments, this variation optimally buffers trash. Most of the barrier is permeable, enhancing trash retention.

3. Interceptor Tender: Enhancing Efficiency

Working in tandem with the Interceptor Barrier, the Interceptor Tender serves as a pivotal asset. This powered barge employs a conveyor belt to gather debris from barriers and offload it onto onshore dumpsters. While the Interceptor Barrier captures trash, the Tender extracts and offloads it. Collaboration with Berky GmbH yielded this mobile extraction and offloading unit, optimized for servicing multiple barriers.

4. Interceptor Barricade: Stemming the Tide

Installed in the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala, the Interceptor Barricade was designed to withstand extreme pressure during rainy season floods. Comprising two booms – one upstream and another downstream – it serves a unique purpose. The upstream boom handles significant pressure and waste, optimizing plastic extraction. The downstream boom captures plastic missed or displaced due to rapid trash accumulation and pressure surges in this challenging river.

In the relentless fight against plastic pollution, addressing the source in rivers is paramount. By collaborating, innovating, and implementing diverse solutions, THEOCEANCLEANUP strives to reclaim our waterways and oceans from the grip of plastic waste. The journey to a cleaner, healthier planet requires a collective effort, and the battle begins at the intersection of technology, determination, and environmental stewardship.
