My husband and I are originally from Hollywood, Florida. We both grew up pretty citified, not knowing much about country life. We left the city on July 1, 2000 and moved out to the woods to help out with Lucky’s grandmother. My father-in-law raised goats, chickens, geese, pigs and cows, so we had to adjust to country life. It took a while, life was pretty tough for us having to get used to the fact that “town” was 20 minutes away, jobs were scarce and death was a part of life. We lived there 6 years when Lucky’s dad passed away from cancer, then another year and a half after that, when we decided country life wasn’t for us and moved to Sebastian, Florida.
The one thing we missed the most about the farm were fresh eggs. We hadn’t had to pay for eggs for 7 1/2 years. After living in our house for about 5 years we decided to get chickens. We found out we could have 2 chickens in our neighborhood, no roosters. Most people think of eggs when they hear you have chickens, we were no different, but there is so much more to them than just giving you eggs. They are extremely smart, they make the best pest control, they help keep weeds down and produce fertilizer for the garden. I really loved having them, they really added value to my life.
