Day 4: Early Interactions

The grand ballroom of the Victorian mansion hums with life as guests mill about, their voices a soft murmur under the steady clinking of glasses and the mechanical rhythm of the automaton orchestra. Gears tick in the walls, propelling the mansion’s inner workings, while brass chandeliers cast a warm glow over the gathering. It’s the fourth day of the Grand Christmas Gala, and while the air feels festive, subtle tensions ripple beneath the surface, like a coiled spring waiting to snap.

Angelica stands near the arched windows, watching the snowfall outside, when she feels the familiar stirring inside her. The presence of Anna— her mother, who usually resides in the Fourth Dimension, was strong tonight, she has some business to attend to. Angelica’s eyes scan the ballroom, resting on Lord Aurelius and Lady Grissel, who stand like statues at the far end of the room, deep in conversation with a few other guests.

As if sensing the weight of her gaze, Lord Aurelius turns, his sharp silver eyes locking onto hers for a brief moment before he murmurs something to Lady Grissel. The lady’s head tilts slightly in Angelica’s direction, her lips curving into the faintest hint of a smile.

“Ready?” Angelica whispers inwardly, knowing Anna can hear her.

Always, Anna’s voice, soft but firm, ripples in.

Taking a deep breath, Angelica moves toward Lord Aurelius and Lady Grissel. As she nears, the noble pair turn their full attention to her, their expressions polite but guarded.

“Lady Angelica,” Lord Aurelius greets, his voice smooth, almost too pleasant. “Enjoying the gala, I trust?”

Angelica smiles, “It’s been… enlightening so far.” She pauses, feeling Anna push to the surface. Her voice takes on a subtle shift as Anna begins to speak through her. “I trust the tensions in the Outer Systems haven’t affected your enjoyment of the evening?”

Lord Aurelius’ smile falters, but only for a split second, as if he were recalculating. “Tensions? I’m not sure what you’re referring to.”

Anna, through Angelica, tilts her head. “Come now, Aurelius. We both know that the alliances in The Wheel of Power have been… delicate. It wouldn’t be like you to ignore such shifts.”

Lady Grissel’s eyes flicker with interest, though she remains silent. Lord Aurelius, however, keeping his composure, smiles sharply. “Ah, yes. The political dance. Always an entertaining topic.”

Anna states firmly. “It’s not a game to those caught in the middle.”

Angelica can feel the energy between them tighten, as if a line had been drawn. Aurelius and Grissel are powerful figures, well-versed in politics and manipulation. Anna knows this, but there is something more she’s pushing toward—a tension that could lead to future confrontation.

Before Aurelius can respond, the ballroom doors creak open, and a hush falls over the crowd. The Nibirians have arrived.

The tall, graceful beings from Planet Nibiru glide into the room, their presence commanding instant attention. They are adorned in flowing, iridescent robes that shimmer as they move, their skin a pale, almost translucent hue. Their faces are smooth, emotionless masks, their eyes vast and unblinking, like deep wells of endless space. Though their arrival adds a touch of exotic beauty to the gala, there’s something unnerving about the complete lack of emotion in their demeanor.

“They really know how to make an entrance,” Angelica whispers to herself, though Anna remains silent.

The Nibirians bow slightly to the room, their movements fluid, almost too perfect. They speak little, but their very presence is enough to shift the mood of the gala. Guests whisper among themselves, some in awe, others in suspicion. No one knows their true motives—these high-vibrational entities claim to seek peace, but their lack of emotional attachment leave others wary of their intentions.

Angelica watches them closely, feeling the ripple of unease spread through the room. Whatever they were here for, it isn’t simple.

In the corner of the ballroom, near the tall Christmas tree, three children play quietly, though their eyes dart toward the adults, ever curious. Matt, ten years old, is the leader of their little group, his brown hair falling messily into his eyes as he peeks around the tree. His sister Jenny, a year younger, sits cross-legged beside him, her wide eyes taking in every word of the nearby conversations. Bo, Robert and Sabrina’s seven-year-old son, watches them with a grin, eager to join in whatever game Matt is planning.

“Did you hear that?” Jenny whispers, tugging at Matt’s sleeve.

Matt frowns. “Hear what?”

“I think that’s Lady Grissel” Jenny nods toward a cluster of guests. “She’s talking about someone making alliances. I think they’re planning something.”

Bo leans in. “Like a secret plan?”

“Maybe,” Jenny says thoughtfully. “I don’t think they want anyone to know.”

Matt’s eyes light up with excitement, always loving a good mystery. “We should tell Angelica.”

The three children are close to Angelica, almost like siblings. In fact, they were there when she miraculously transformed from a toddler to an adult, right before their very eyes, during an event they still couldn’t fully comprehend. It had bonded them to her in a way they couldn’t explain, and though she had aged far beyond them, they still saw her as one of their own.

Bo nods eagerly. “Let’s go!”

They scurry across the ballroom, careful to stay out of sight as they make their way toward Angelica. She is standing near one of the grand windows again, her eyes scanning the crowd as though she’s expecting something. Matt tugs at her sleeve when they reach her.

“Angelica!” he whispers softly. “We heard something!”

Angelica turns, her gaze softening as she sees the three children. “What did you hear, Matt?”

Jenny leans in, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Is that Lady Grissel over there? I heard her talking about alliances and plans. I don’t think they want anyone to know, but we think it’s important.”

Angelica’s eyes flick toward the crowd where Jenny had pointed, her mind racing. “Yes, Jenny, you’re right that’s her. Good work, you three,” she says quietly, glancing around to make sure no one else is listening. “Keep your ears open, alright? But be careful and let me know if you hear anything else.”

Matt puffs out his chest proudly, and the children nod in unison before slipping away, eager to continue their spying mission.

Angelica smiles, though her thoughts are far from light. The children’s overheard conversation confirms what she and Anna had suspected—this gala wasn’t just about holiday festivities. There are deeper machinations at work, and whatever is happening here tonight can have far-reaching consequences.

The ballroom continues to buzz with activity as the night wares on, but the mood is shifting. Conversations grow quieter, glances more suspicious. The Nibirians stand at the far end of the room, their stillness adding an air of mystery that no one dare to approach.

Angelica moves through the crowd, her senses alert, Anna a quiet but steady presence in her mind. She has already crossed paths with Aurelius and Grissel, but something tells her that their dealings are only the beginning. The children have given her another thread to follow, and she would follow it to the end.

But as the gears tick quietly behind the walls and the Nibirians’ emotionless eyes watch from across the room, Angelica knows one thing for certain: the gala is far more than it seems. The stakes are rising, and soon, the masks everyone is waring—whether political or personal—will have to come off.

And when they do, the real game will begin.
