Chapter 1

The air is dry and sharp, carrying the scent of sulfur and ash as Angelica, Bo, Jenny, and Matt climb the rocky terrain. The onyx pendant glows faintly in Angelica’s hand, its light pulsing in slow, steady beats like a heart. Around them, the jagged peaks of the volcanic mountain stretch skyward, their craggy surfaces streaked with blackened scars from old eruptions.

Jenny stumbles over a loose rock, muttering under her breath. “We’ve been climbing for hours. Are we even sure this is the right place?”

Angelica pauses, glancing at the pendant in her hand. The warmth it radiates is stronger now, like a beacon pulling them forward. She looks over her shoulder, meeting Jenny’s worried gaze.

“It’s here,” Angelica says firmly. “The Aries glyph appeared after Pisces for a reason. This mountain is tied to the sign. We just have to keep going.”

Jenny sighs, but she nods. “I just wish it wasn’t so… steep. And hot. And—”

“Unpleasant?” Matt cuts in, smirking as he adjusts the strap of his bag. “You get used to it. We’ve been running on bad luck and creepy temples for months now. What’s a little heat stroke?”

Bo shakes his head, his expression calm. “Focus, both of you. We’re getting close. Look at the rocks.”

Angelica follows his gaze to the blackened stones ahead. Faint, glowing symbols are etched into their surfaces—flames curling around the outline of a ram’s head. The Aries glyph.

Angelica’s chest tightens. “We’re in the right place.”

As the group presses on, the trail narrows, winding precariously along the edge of a steep cliff. Below them, the distant hiss of molten lava echoes through the air, a reminder of the mountain’s volatile nature.

Jenny stops suddenly, her eyes wide. “Did anyone else see that?”

Angelica turns to her. “See what?”

Jenny points to the horizon, where the setting sun casts a fiery glow across the jagged peaks. For a moment, a ram wreathed in flames materializes in the sky. Its body flickers like a mirage, its fiery horns curling upward as it stares directly at them.

Bo steps forward, shielding his eyes from the glare. “It’s not a mirage.”

Matt squints, his tone incredulous. “Great. So now we’re following a burning ghost goat? This just keeps getting better.”

Angelica doesn’t respond. The ram turns, its fiery form leaping gracefully from one peak to another, its movements deliberate and fluid. The onyx pendant grows warmer in her hand, its light flaring briefly before returning to its steady glow.

“It’s guiding us,” Angelica says softly.

Jenny frowns. “What if it’s leading us into a trap?”

Angelica meets her gaze, her voice steady. “We don’t have a choice. The artifact is here, and the ram is tied to Aries. If we’re going to find it, we have to follow.”

The group follows the ram’s path, the narrow trail forcing them to move single file. The climb becomes steeper, the air thinner, and the heat oppressive. The glowing Aries glyphs grow more frequent, their fiery patterns seeming to pulse with life.

Jenny wipes sweat from her brow, her voice tinged with irritation. “I don’t get it. How is this supposed to be a trial for Aries? We’re just walking up a really uncomfortable mountain.”

Matt laughs dryly. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m sure there’s a temple full of death traps waiting for us at the top. That’s usually how this works.”

Bo glances at Angelica, his expression thoughtful. “The trials aren’t just about the artifact. They’re about us—what we’re willing to endure, how we work together.”

Jenny rolls her eyes. “I think we’ve proved that already. We survived Pisces, didn’t we?”

Angelica’s voice is quiet but firm. “Pisces was about balance. Aries is different. It’s about strength.” She glances at the pendant, its glow reflecting the faint red threads still connecting the group. “And it’s going to test what that means for all of us.”

Matt scoffs, but his voice carries an edge of uncertainty. “Great. Can’t wait.”

As the sun dips below the horizon, the mountain seems to come alive. The faint rumble of distant lava grows louder, and the glowing Aries glyphs burn brighter, casting flickering shadows along the rocky path.

The group reaches a plateau, where a massive cave entrance looms before them. Its edges are carved with intricate symbols of flames and horns, and the Aries glyph glows prominently above the archway. Heat radiates from within, and the sound of crackling fire echoes from the depths.

Angelica stops, staring at the cave. The onyx pendant burns hot against her skin, and the red threads pulse faintly, their glow stronger than before.

“This is it,” she says softly.

Bo steps up beside her, his gaze scanning the entrance. “What do you think we’ll find in there?”

Angelica glances at the pendant, her jaw tightening. “The artifact. And whatever Aries thinks will test us the most.”

Jenny hesitates, her voice trembling. “Do we… do we even know how to face fire? Pisces was water, but this is different. Fire destroys.”

Angelica turns to her, her voice steady. “Fire doesn’t just destroy. It creates. It clears the way for something new.”

Matt chuckles darkly. “Well, let’s hope it doesn’t clear us out of existence.”

Bo places a hand on Angelica’s shoulder, his tone calm. “We’re ready. Whatever’s in there, we’ll face it together.”

Angelica nods, stepping forward into the cave. The heat intensifies immediately, and the light of the pendant flares, illuminating the fiery depths. The others follow, their footsteps echoing as the cave seems to close in around them.

As they descend deeper, the air becomes heavier, and the faint flicker of flames dances along the walls. The red threads connecting the group glow brighter, a quiet reminder of the bonds they’ve forged.

Ahead, the path splits into two narrow corridors, and the Aries glyph burns brightly above each one.

Angelica stops, staring at the glyphs. “A choice,” she murmurs.
