Chapter 3
The flames roar, licking the walls of the chamber as the statue of the ram comes to life. Its eyes burn like twin suns, and the air grows thick with heat and tension. The group stands frozen as the Aries artifact, a fiery crystal shaped like a ram’s horn, floats above the statue’s outstretched hooves.
Angelica grips the onyx pendant, its light flickering against the surge of fire surrounding the artifact. Sweat drips down her temples, but her focus remains steady.
“Stay close,” she says, her voice firm. “The ram said we have to withstand its fury. This is the trial.”
Matt gestures to the flames swirling between them and the artifact, his voice sharp. “Fury? That’s putting it mildly! We can’t get through that!”
Jenny clings to Bo’s arm, her voice trembling. “The fire’s too strong. How are we supposed to get to the artifact without—”
A sharp hiss interrupts her, the sound echoing from the shadows of the chamber. The flames cast long, distorted shapes along the walls, and from those shapes, the Shadows emerge.
The Shadows are different this time. Their forms are less jagged, more fluid, as though the fire has softened their edges. But their presence is no less menacing. They glide along the walls and floor, coiling like smoke, their whispers rising in a chaotic chorus.
Bo steps protectively in front of Jenny, his voice low. “They’re here.”
Matt raises his flashlight instinctively, but the beam flickers and dies in the oppressive heat. “Of course they are. Because fire and death traps weren’t enough!”
Angelica focuses on the pendant, its glow intensifying as the Shadows draw closer. She takes a deep breath, her voice calm but urgent. “The Shadows feed on doubt and fear. That’s why they’re here now. The trial isn’t just about strength—it’s about controlling what’s inside us.”
Jenny glances at the swirling flames around the artifact, then back at the Shadows. “So what do we do? Fight them?”
Angelica nods. “Not just them. Ourselves.”
The Shadows lunge, their tendrils reaching out with serpentine speed. Bo swings his arm to block one from grabbing Jenny, but it passes through him, circling back to attack from another angle.
Angelica steps forward, holding the pendant high. Its light flares, creating a temporary barrier that forces the Shadows to retreat. But the effort leaves her winded, and the flames around the artifact seem to burn hotter, as if feeding on her energy.
The statue of the ram speaks, its voice a deep, resonant rumble:
“Strength is not in the hand that strikes, but in the fire that endures. Show me your will to stand against the storm within.”
The flames surge outward, forcing the group to scatter. The Shadows capitalize on the chaos, darting between the fire and attacking from all sides.
Angelica’s Test
As Angelica deflects another Shadow with the pendant’s light, she hears a voice—her own voice—whispering in her mind:
“You’re not strong enough. You’re dragging them into danger because you can’t let go of the prophecy.”
Her hands tremble, the pendant’s glow faltering. A Shadow lunges toward her, but she holds her ground, forcing herself to focus. “No. I’m not doing this for me. I’m doing this because we’re stronger together.”
The red threads connecting her to the group pulse faintly, and the Shadow shrieks, recoiling. Angelica steadies herself, her resolve hardening.
Bo’s Test
Bo watches as a Shadow circles Jenny, its tendrils reaching for her with malicious intent. His instincts scream at him to act, but a voice in his mind whispers:
“You can’t save them all. You’re not strong enough. You’ll fail, just like before.”
Bo clenches his fists, stepping forward despite the fear clawing at his chest. “I don’t need to save them all. I just need to protect the ones I can.”
He swings his flashlight like a weapon, the motion guided by sheer will. The Shadow recoils, its form flickering. Bo grabs Jenny’s arm, pulling her back to safety.
Jenny’s Test
Jenny feels the heat pressing down on her, the roar of the flames drowning out her thoughts. A Shadow coils around her, whispering:
“You’re a burden. They’d be better off without you.”
Tears sting her eyes, but she takes a shaky breath, focusing on the faint glow of the thread between her and Bo. “That’s not true. I’ve fought just as hard as they have.”
She pushes against the Shadow’s tendrils, her fear replaced by determination. The thread between her and Bo flares brightly, forcing the Shadow to dissolve.
Matt’s Test
Matt swings his flashlight wildly, cursing under his breath as the Shadows close in. One of them whispers in his ear:
“You don’t belong here. You’re not brave enough to stay. Run while you still can.”
Matt hesitates, the weight of the words sinking in. But then he hears Angelica’s voice cutting through the chaos: “Matt! We need you!”
He grits his teeth, shoving the voice aside. “I’m still here, aren’t I?” He steps forward, placing himself between a Shadow and Angelica, his resolve hardening.
The Shadows begin to retreat, their forms breaking apart as the group’s determination strengthens the glow of the red threads. The statue of the ram speaks again, its voice filled with power:
“You have faced the fire within. Now, take the light, and let it burn brighter with every step.”
The flames surrounding the artifact subside, creating a clear path. Angelica steps forward, her heart pounding as she reaches for the fiery crystal. The moment her fingers touch it, a surge of heat courses through her body, and the artifact’s light merges with the pendant.
The ram statue’s eyes flare one last time, and its voice resonates through the chamber:
“Strength tempered by trust will carry you forward. The next light awaits.”
Before the group can catch their breath, the Shadows return, their fractured forms surging with desperation. The heat in the chamber intensifies as the walls begin to tremble, cracks forming in the volcanic rock.
Angelica raises the pendant, its combined light from Pisces and Aries flaring brightly. “We need to move. Now!”
The group fights their way through the collapsing chamber, the Shadows pursuing them with relentless fury. The red threads pulse brightly, giving them strength as they navigate falling debris and rising heat.
At the chamber’s exit, the Shadows make one final lunge, but the pendant’s light explodes outward, driving them back into the fire.
The group emerges onto the mountain’s slope, the volcanic heat replaced by the cool night air. Behind them, the cave collapses, sealing the Aries artifact’s trial within.
The flaming ram appears briefly on a nearby peak, its voice soft but resolute:
“The fire within you burns brighter now. Let it guide you to the next sign.”
As the image fades, Angelica looks at the pendant, its glow steady and warm. She turns to the group, her voice firm. “We’ve made it through Aries. But the next trial will be harder. We have to be ready.”
Jenny smiles faintly, brushing soot from her sleeve. “We’ve got this. Together.”
Bo nods, and even Matt smirks, his usual sarcasm softened. “Onward to the next death trap, then.”
The group descends the mountain, the faint image of a bull surrounded by earth and stars glowing on the horizon.
