CHAPTER 2: Near-Death Experience Accounts of a Cleansing Light

Modern near-death experiences (NDEs) often echo ancient spiritual motifs of purification. Across cultures, people revived from clinical death frequently describe entering a brilliant, loving Light that seems to wash away pain and fear. A 2014 analysis noted that many NDEs include

“a tunnel with warm, loving light… friends [or relatives waiting]… [and] a realization that her soul was part of God and everything… was created from the light.” (blog.sevenponds.com)

Common elements reported include an out-of-body experience (OBE), a life review, feelings of overwhelming love, and a sense of “cleansing light [and] omnipresent euphoria” enveloping the person (blog.sevenponds.com). Experiencers often say this Light conveys absolute acceptance and unconditional love, giving a feeling of being healed or purified at a profound soul-level.

For example, one NDE experiencer (Vicki W.) described being taken to a “healing temple” in the spiritual realm:

“Pure white light and then different colors bombarded me; not unlike a shower of light cleansing me of all negativity from the earthly plane, mind, body and soul.” (near-death.com)

Such imagery of a luminous shower or bath is strikingly common. NDE researcher Dr. Kenneth Ring noted that NDEs often have a “transformative” effect: experiencers feel “born anew,” having released lifelong fears and burdens in the presence of the Light.

During the life review – another near-universal feature – people relive their actions and feel what others felt as a result of their behavior (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). This empathetic reliving can act as a moral catharsis, imprinting lessons of love and compassion. Some NDErs describe this review as inherently purifying: they confront their misdeeds, feel genuine remorse, and experience forgiveness. The Being of Light or guiding presence often conveys that they are loved despite their flaws, which many interpret as a cleansing forgiveness that frees them from guilt.

After NDEs, people commonly report a changed life: increased spirituality, loss of the fear of death, and release of negative habits – almost as if the “cleansing light” literally washed their soul and reset their priorities. One article observed that regardless of religion or culture,

“NDEs typically inspire profound and positive change in beliefs, values, behaviors… quite comparable afterward” (blog.sevenponds.com).

This suggests the “purification” seen in NDEs has lasting effects, consistent with what spiritual traditions promise from their afterlife purgations (removal of “attachments” and a renewed being).

While science has yet to fully explain NDE phenomena, researchers like Dr. Jeffrey Long have documented countless cases of people who were clinically dead and later described entering a realm of light and love, meeting luminous beings or deceased relatives, undergoing healing, and returning with a sense that they had been “sent back” better than before. The imagery of cleansing – be it a tunnel, a light “bath,” or a healing presence – is so frequent that it stands as one of the core NDE motifs across hundreds of recorded accounts (blog.sevenponds.com).
