To anyone else, he may have seemed utterly lost, but to Anna, he was more present than she’d ever witnessed.

When he finished playing, Anna erupted into passionate applause. “That was beautiful, Papa!” she gushed, bouncing on the couch cushion. “You played so magnificently! Will you teach me too?”

With a contented smile, her father joined his spellbound audience on the sofa. “Before you can even pick up an instrument, my darling,” he began in his rich baritone, “you must first understand the core concepts of rhythm and expression. They are the lifeblood of all music.”

Placing a gentle hand over her wildly beating heart, he continued, “Execution alone, without rhythm to elevate it, is soulless – all technical expertise and no vibrancy.
