Chapter 5:

Lady Seraphina stood in the doorway, her face a stark contrast to the composed, serene figure she had encountered before. Blood trickled from a cut above her brow, streaking down her pale cheek and staining the delicate lace collar of her once-elegant gown. Her dark hair, usually immaculately arranged, was now disheveled, with loose strands falling wildly around her face. The gown itself, a masterpiece of Victorian fashion, was torn and dirtied, the rich fabric marred by soot and blood, reflecting the chaos she had just escaped.

The young woman stared at Seraphina in shock, struggling to reconcile this vision of distress with the calm, composed figure she had always known. Seraphina had always been a symbol of strength, a pillar of the Coalition’s elite, yet here she was, looking as though she had barely escaped with her life.

“Lady Seraphina,” the young woman gasped, her voice trembling with both relief and concern. “What happened to you? Are you hurt?”

Seraphina’s eyes, usually sharp and commanding, were now clouded with pain and fear. She staggered into the room, her breath labored, and leaned heavily against the doorframe as if the weight of the world had suddenly become too much to bear. The door creaked as it closed behind her, sealing the two women in the small, candlelit chamber.

“The Coalition…” Seraphina began, her voice raspy and weak, as though each word took immense effort to speak. “They’re not what they seem. None of this is what it seems.”

The young woman moved to her side, instinctively reaching out to support her. “What do you mean? What’s happening? You need to sit down, let me help you.”

But Seraphina shook her head, refusing the offer of aid. “No… no time. You must listen to me,” she insisted, her tone desperate. “Everything they told us, everything we believed in… it’s all a lie. The Coalition, the war… it’s not what we think.”

Her words sent a chill down the young woman’s spine. She had always trusted the Coalition, believed in their mission, their cause. They were supposed to be the protectors of peace and order, the defenders of humanity against the chaos that threatened to engulf the solar system. But now, hearing Seraphina’s words, seeing the fear in her eyes, those certainties began to crumble.

“Seraphina, you’re not making sense,” the young woman said, trying to keep her voice steady. “What are you talking about? What lie?”

Seraphina’s hands trembled as she reached into the folds of her torn gown, pulling out a small, metallic device. It was a data chip, no larger than a thumbnail, but its surface was scratched and stained with blood. She held it out to the young woman, her grip so tight that her knuckles had turned white.

“Take this,” she urged, her voice barely above a whisper. “You need to keep it safe. You’ll know what to do. You must stop this madness.”

“Seraphina, I don’t understand. What’s on this chip? What’s happening?”

But before Seraphina could answer, the door behind her burst open with a deafening crash, splintering into pieces as it was kicked off its hinges. The force of the impact sent Seraphina sprawling to the floor, the data chip slipping from her grasp and skidding across the room.

The young woman spun around in terror, her eyes locking onto the figure now standing in the doorway. It was another robot, but this one was different from the sentinel she had seen earlier. Its body was bulkier, designed for brute strength rather than speed, and its eyes glowed a menacing red, devoid of any semblance of humanity. The machine’s armor was black as night, absorbing the dim light in the room, and in its hand, it held a massive, serrated blade, the weapon humming with a low, menacing frequency.

The young woman’s heart pounded in her chest as the robot advanced, each step, deliberate and unrelenting. She knew instinctively that this machine was here for Seraphina, and that it would not leave until its mission was complete.

“Run!” Seraphina screamed; her voice filled with a desperation the young woman had never heard before. “Run, and don’t look back!”

But the young woman was frozen in place, her mind racing as she struggled to process the horror unfolding before her. She wanted to help Seraphina, to fight back, but she knew that she was no match for the killing machine now bearing down on them.

With a sudden burst of resolve, the young woman dove for the data chip, her fingers closing around it just as the robot reached Seraphina. The machine’s blade flashed in the candlelight, and Seraphina let out a scream of pain as the weapon struck her down, the sound echoing through the small chamber.

Tears streamed down the young woman’s face as she scrambled to her feet, clutching the data chip to her chest. She couldn’t save Seraphina, but she could honor her last request. She could get the chip to safety.

Without looking back, she bolted from the room, her heart breaking with every step as Seraphina’s screams grew fainter behind her. She didn’t know where she was going, only that she had to get away, had to escape the horror that had descended upon her world.

As she ran, the cold, hard reality of what Seraphina had said began to sink in. The Coalition, the war, everything she had believed in—it was all a lie. And now, with Seraphina gone, it was up to her to uncover the truth, to find a way to stop the madness before it was too late.

But as the young woman fled into the night, one question lingered in her mind, a question that gnawed at her with every step she took.

What had Seraphina discovered that was worth dying for? ⚫
