Chapter 9

The young woman’s breath came in ragged gasps as she sprinted through the labyrinthine corridors of the Fortress of Eos. Every twist and turn seemed to lead to another dead end, another stone wall that loomed ominously in the dim light. Her pulse pounded in her ears, and the sound of Verona’s angry shouts echoed faintly behind her, growing louder with each passing second.

She was running out of time.

The weight of the data chip in her hand felt like a burden she could barely carry. She knew that if she didn’t find a way out soon, Verona would catch up to her, and the consequences would be dire. But the fortress was a maze, and she was hopelessly lost, each passage looking more identical to the last.

Turning a corner, she suddenly skidded to a halt, her heart nearly leaping out of her chest. Standing in the center of the corridor was a woman unlike any she had ever seen.

The woman was tall, with skin the color of polished ebony that seemed to absorb the faint light around her, giving her an ethereal glow. She was dressed in a Victorian-style gown, the fabric a stunning iridescent white that shimmered like liquid moonlight. The dress was intricately detailed, with high lace collars and delicate embroidery that caught the light with every movement. But it wasn’t just her attire that caught the young woman’s attention—it was the snake.

The snake, the same color as the woman’s dress, was draped across her shoulders and coiled around her arms, its body shimmering with the same iridescence as the fabric. The creature moved with a fluid grace, its scales glinting as it slithered around the woman’s body, its head resting near her cheek as though it were a beloved pet. Its eyes, a pale, almost translucent silver, seemed to glow with an otherworldly light as it watched the young woman with a steady, unblinking gaze.

Behind the woman, more figures emerged from the shadows—other women, each dressed in the same white, iridescent gowns, each with a serpent of their own. The snakes coiled around them like living jewelry, their bodies twining around arms, necks, and waists in a display that was both beautiful and unnerving. The women moved in perfect synchrony, their expressions serene, their eyes locked onto the young woman as if they had been waiting for her.

The young woman’s instincts screamed at her to turn and run, but something in the dark-skinned woman’s gaze held her in place. There was an intensity in those eyes, a depth of understanding that cut through the fear and panic that had driven her this far. She couldn’t look away.

The woman in the white dress took a step forward, the snake shifting slightly as it adjusted its coils. “You are lost,” she said, her voice soft and melodic, yet carrying an undeniable power. “But you have something precious, something that many would kill to possess.”

The young woman’s grip tightened on the data chip, her mind racing. “Who are you?” she demanded, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and defiance. “What do you want?”

The woman smiled, a gentle curve of her lips that was both comforting and unsettling. “My name is Selene,” she replied, her eyes never leaving the young woman’s. “And what I want is what you want—to escape this place, to find the truth hidden within that which you carry.”

Selene’s words hung in the air like a tangible presence, the weight of them pressing down on the young woman’s chest. She didn’t know if she could trust this woman—everything about this encounter felt strange, otherworldly—but she was out of options, and every instinct told her that this was the path she needed to take.

“How do I know I can trust you?” the young woman asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Selene’s smile widened slightly, and she reached out a hand, the snake’s head turning to regard the young woman with those eerie, glowing eyes. “Because, child, you have no choice. The serpent of truth is with us, and it knows what lies within your heart. It can guide you, if you allow it.”

The young woman’s gaze flicked to the snake, its scales shimmering like opals in the dim light. There was something hypnotic about the way it moved, the way its gaze seemed to pierce through the layers of fear and doubt that clouded her mind. She felt a strange pull, as if the creature were calling to her, beckoning her to step forward and accept its guidance.

Behind Selene, the other women watched in silence, their expressions serene, their snakes coiling and uncoiling in a rhythm that matched the young woman’s racing heartbeat. There was something ancient about them, something that spoke of knowledge and power far beyond anything she could comprehend.

Taking a deep breath, the young woman stepped forward, closing the distance between herself and Selene. The snake lifted its head slightly, its tongue flicking out as if tasting the air around her. She could feel the eyes of the other women on her, but she focused only on Selene, on the calm, steady presence that seemed to radiate from her.

“What do I have to do?” the young woman asked, her voice steady despite the fear still gnawing at her insides.

Selene extended her hand, palm up, the snake’s body shifting slightly as it adjusted to the movement. “Give me the chip,” she said, her voice gentle but firm. “And let the serpent guide you.”

The young woman hesitated, her grip tightening on the chip. This was the moment of truth—the decision that would determine everything. Could she trust Selene? Could she trust the serpent?

She thought of Seraphina, of Ray, of the sacrifices that had been made to bring her to this point. She thought of the lies, the betrayal, the burning city of New Argonaut. And then, with a deep breath, she placed the data chip in Selene’s outstretched hand.

Selene closed her fingers around the chip, her expression unreadable as she studied the young woman. The snake coiled more tightly around her arm, its head dipping down as if to examine the chip as well. For a moment, there was only silence, the weight of the decision hanging heavy in the air.

Then, Selene nodded, as if coming to a decision. “You have chosen wisely,” she said softly, her eyes meeting the young woman’s once more. “Now, let the serpent lead you to the truth.”

Before the young woman could react, Selene reached out with her other hand, the one not holding the chip, and placed it gently on the young woman’s forehead. The touch was cool, almost comforting, but there was a sudden surge of energy, a feeling of something ancient and powerful flowing through her.

The world around her seemed to shift and blur, the stone walls of the fortress fading away as a new vision took its place. She saw flashes of light, of memories not her own, of ancient secrets buried deep within the cosmos. And through it all, she felt the presence of the serpent, guiding her, revealing the truths she had been searching for.

When the vision cleared, she found herself standing alone in the corridor, the fortress silent around her. The women in white were gone, as was Selene, but the data chip was still clutched tightly in her hand. She felt different—stronger, more resolved. The fear that had driven her before was still there, but it was tempered now by a new sense of purpose.

She knew what she had to do.

With a final glance at the empty corridor, the young woman turned and began to move, her steps confident and sure. She didn’t know where the path would lead, but she knew that the truth was within her grasp—and she wouldn’t stop until she had uncovered it all.
