Chapter 4

The air in the nursery is dense, heavy with something unseen yet felt in every nerve. Angelica holds the small bronze figurine of the Sea Goat, its body cool and impossibly smooth despite the intricate carvings etched along its surface. A faint silver glow shimmers at the edges, pulsing softly like the beat of a hidden heart.

“It’s Capricorn,” she says, her voice a murmur, though it carries clearly in the silence. “The first sign.”

Matt runs a hand through his hair, his expression somewhere between confusion and frustration. “The first what? Angelica, you keep talking like we’re all on the same page, but we’re not. What does this even mean?”

Angelica doesn’t look at him. Her gaze remains fixed on the figurine, as if she’s waiting for it to speak to her. “The twelve signs of the Zodiac are keys. Each one represents a part of the celestial map, a part of what my mother—what her people—left behind.”

Jenny steps closer, her voice soft. “This little…goat-fish thing? It’s a key?”

“More than a key,” Angelica replies, her green eyes lifting to meet Jenny’s. “It’s a symbol. Each sign holds power, and together they form the path. The path to understanding what the clock awakened—and what comes next.”

Bo stares at the figurine in her hand. “And what comes next?”

Angelica hesitates for a beat. “It depends on us.”

Before anyone can say more, the room shudders. The windows rattle in their frames, and the faint glow of the figurine intensifies, throwing silvery light across the nursery walls. Shadows ripple and stretch unnaturally, sliding along the peeling wallpaper like ink spilled in water.

The shadows coil around the nursery walls, their tendrils stretching toward the group. Whispers fill the air, soft but sharp, cutting through their resolve.

“This isn’t going to work,” Matt mutters, stepping back. “We don’t even know what we’re looking for.”

Jenny’s voice trembles as she turns to Angelica. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing? This… this feels wrong.”

Angelica’s grip on the figurine tightens, its faint glow flickering as the doubt in the room grows heavier. The shadows press closer, feeding on the tension.

Jenny grabs Bo’s arm. “Did you see that?”

Matt spins, the beam of his flashlight darting toward the far wall. “It’s just…just a trick of the light, right?”

Angelica grips the figurine tightly and rises to her feet, her face pale but composed. “No. It’s not.”

The shadows pull together, twisting and writhing like something alive. A low sound vibrates through the room—a hum that seems to seep up through the floorboards, growing louder and deeper until it resolves into a rhythmic thud.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Jenny flinches, backing away. “Is that…footsteps?”

Bo’s eyes narrow. “No one else is supposed to be here.”

“It’s not someone,” Angelica says, her voice soft but steady. “It’s something.”

The thudding grows louder, reverberating through the nursery walls and shaking loose flakes of dust from the ceiling. Matt swings the flashlight toward the doorway, and for the briefest moment, they see it—a shadowy figure, darker than the rest of the room, standing motionless just beyond the threshold.

The flashlight flickers violently. The figure vanishes.

Matt swears under his breath. “Nope. Nope, I’m done.”

“Quiet,” Angelica says sharply, her tone more commanding than they’ve ever heard. She steps forward, the figurine still glowing faintly in her hand. “It’s drawn to the sign. The house has been waiting for this, and now it’s awake.”

Bo clenches his fists, his deep voice steady despite the tension in his shoulders. “What’s it want with us?”

“The signs,” Angelica replies. “They don’t just guide us. They attract them.”

Jenny’s voice wavers. “Them?”

Angelica’s eyes darken. “The Shadows.”

Angelica stands, her green eyes glowing faintly. Her mother’s words echo in her mind, clear and steady: Persistence is the foundation of power. Do not let doubt sway your path.”

“You will not stop us,” Angelica says, her voice firm and unwavering. She raises the Sea Goat figurine, its glow intensifying as she focuses on the memory of her mother’s lessons.

The figurine pulses with light, and the Shadows recoil, their whispers dissolving into silence.

The thudding stops. The room falls eerily silent, as though the house itself is holding its breath. Then the door to the hallway slams shut with a deafening BANG!

Jenny screams. Matt jumps back, crashing into the rocking chair.

“Angelica!” Bo calls, spinning toward her as the shadows along the walls begin to peel away. They coil together like tendrils of smoke, gathering in the corners of the room, swirling into an amorphous darkness that seems to hum with energy.

Angelica doesn’t move. Her gaze is locked on the swirling shadows, her face calm but set with determination. She raises the glowing Sea Goat figurine, and the light intensifies, casting sharp beams into the growing darkness.

“Get behind me,” she says firmly.

Matt, still holding the flashlight, stares at her. “What are you gonna do? Shine a goat-shaped nightlight at it?”

“Do it!” Angelica snaps.

The group stumbles toward her, Matt muttering under his breath, but there’s no humor in his voice now. Bo positions himself next to Jenny, his hand on her shoulder as though bracing her.

The shadows twist violently, gathering near the closed door. For a heartbeat, they hold still—silent, watchful. Then, with a sudden lurch, they surge toward the group, spilling across the floor like liquid night.

Angelica steps forward, thrusting the Sea Goat figurine out in front of her. “Stop!

The figurine flares, its glow erupting into a bright, silvery light that floods the room. The shadows recoil instantly, shrieking—not in sound, but in some deeper way, a noise that reverberates through the bones. The darkness writhes, splintering apart as though burned by the light.

Angelica’s voice rings out, steady and clear. “You will not take this.”

The glow pulses once more, and the shadows shatter, dissolving into wisps of smoke that vanish into the cracks of the walls. The room settles again, the silence abrupt and total.

Jenny collapses into the rocking chair, her face pale and tear-streaked. “What…what was that?”

Matt sits heavily on the floor, his flashlight still clutched in his shaking hands. “I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure I need therapy.”

Bo exhales slowly, his chest rising and falling as he steadies his breathing. “That’s what we’re up against?”

Angelica lowers the figurine, its glow now faint and subdued. She turns to face them, her expression grave. “That was a Shadow. It won’t be the last.”

Jenny looks up at her. “Why did it come for us? Why now?”

Angelica grips the figurine tightly. “Because we found the first sign. Each one we uncover will awaken more of them. They’re drawn to the signs, to the power my mother’s people left behind.”

Matt rubs his face, his voice muffled. “This is insane. First clocks, now goat demons. What’s next? A fish with a sword?”

Angelica ignores him. She steps to the center of the nursery, staring at the empty cradle where the figurine had been hidden. “The Sea Goat is just the beginning. There are eleven more signs, and they’re waiting to be found.”

Bo frowns. “What happens when we find them all?”

Angelica turns to him, her green eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. “We’ll either save everything—or lose it all.”

The house groans faintly around them, as though listening.
