Chapter 5

The house is quiet now, but it is not at peace.

Angelica stands at the nursery window, holding the Sea Goat figurine. Its faint glow has dimmed, leaving her face bathed in pale shadows. Outside, snow continues to fall, the world beyond the glass serene in contrast to the chaos within. The others sit huddled nearby, shaken and silent, the weight of what happened pressing down on them.

Jenny breaks the silence first. “So what now? We found the first sign… barely. What’s next?”

Angelica doesn’t turn from the window. “The signs are tied to the celestial map left behind by my mother’s people—their legacy. We found Capricorn, but it’s only the beginning.”

Bo glances at the shattered cradle, now empty. “And the Shadows? They came for us because of the Sea Goat?”

Angelica nods. “They’ve been dormant, just like the signs. Each time we uncover one, it wakes them.”

Matt groans, his head in his hands. “Fantastic. So we’ve got eleven more chances to get eaten by smoke monsters. That’s just great.”

“Not monsters,” Angelica says calmly. “Shadows. They are ancient, older than memory, drawn to the light of the signs because it threatens their existence.”

Jenny’s voice trembles. “But why now? Why are the signs waking up after all this time?”

Angelica finally turns to face them, her green eyes glowing faintly. “Because the clock started it. My mother knew this day would come.”

She lifts the figurine again, its glow casting intricate patterns across the nursery walls. She turns it slowly in her hands, noticing the faint etchings of a star map on its surface.

“What’s that?” Jenny asks, stepping closer.

Angelica traces her fingers over the carving, her green eyes narrowing. “It’s the Sea Goat—a map of Capricorn’s constellation.”

Matt groans, rubbing the back of his neck. “Great. And what are we supposed to do with a glowing goat map?”

Angelica tilts the figurine, watching as its glow aligns with a faint carving on the clock face. The pattern of stars matches perfectly. Beneath the constellation is an inscription, its letters sharp and deliberate:

In the shadow of the goat, persistence stands tall. Where light meets time, the first step is revealed to all.”

Jenny frowns. “What does that mean?”

Angelica adjusts the figurine, aligning its light with the Capricorn constellation on the clock. A soft hum fills the room as the carved stars begin to glow, their light growing brighter as the figurine locks into place.

“It’s a key,” Angelica says softly. “We need to align the light to reveal what’s hidden.”

And if we’re wrong?” Matt asks, his flashlight flickering nervously.

Angelica doesn’t answer. Her grip tightens on the figurine, her expression calm but resolute. “Then we won’t find the path forward.”

Moving toward the nursery wall, where the faded wallpaper still peels in strips, Angelica presses her palm against one of the panels, and for a moment, nothing happens. Then there’s a faint clicking sound, followed by the grinding of old gears. The wallpaper shifts, sliding back to reveal a hidden compartment embedded in the wall.

Jenny gasps. “How did you know that was there?”

Angelica doesn’t answer. She reaches inside the compartment and pulls out a small, ornate box. It’s carved from dark wood—ancient, like the clock—and etched with the same swirling celestial symbols. In the center of the lid lies an onyx inlay, shaped like a droplet of water.

Bo steps closer, his voice low. “What is it?”

Angelica opens the box. Inside, nestled on a cushion of faded velvet, is an onyx necklace. The pendant is smooth and polished, its black surface reflecting the faint light in the room. Carved into its surface is a single symbol: a figure pouring water from a jar—Aquarius.

Matt frowns. “Wait a minute. That’s Aquarius, isn’t it? Like the Zodiac sign?”

Angelica nods. “Yes. But this symbol is older than any astrological chart. It’s tied to myths across time—Ganymede, the cupbearer to the gods in Greek mythology, and Hapi, the god of the Nile in ancient Egypt.”

Jenny stares at the necklace, her voice hushed. “Ganymede… wasn’t he taken to the heavens?”

Angelica’s gaze sharpens. “He was. The symbol of Aquarius represents the flow of life—water, knowledge, and connection between worlds. In my mother’s people’s teachings, the Water Bearer is a key—a sign of renewal, but also of sacrifice.”

Bo studies her, his brow furrowed. “So what does this have to do with us?”

Angelica lifts the necklace, holding it up to the faint light. The onyx pendant glows, its symbol pulsing faintly. “The signs are more than symbols. They’re conduits—gateways. My mother left this for us because it will guide us to the second sign.”

Matt shakes his head. “Let me guess. Wherever this thing leads us, it’s not going to be fun.”

Angelica lowers the necklace, her face unreadable. “No. It won’t.”

The room settles into an uneasy calm.

Matt exhales sharply, rubbing his temples. “Great. Eleven more life lessons to survive. Can’t wait.”

Before anyone can say more, the house groans—a deep, resonant sound that vibrates through the floorboards. The lights flicker violently, plunging the room into darkness for a split second before Matt’s flashlight flares back to life.

Jenny jumps, her voice sharp. “What was that?”

Bo raises the flashlight, sweeping its beam across the nursery. “Something’s happening.”

The temperature plummets. Their breath mists in the air as the shadows in the corners of the room begin to move—slithering along the walls, pooling together into something darker and more tangible.

Matt stumbles back. “Oh, not again. Angelica—what’s happening?”

Angelica’s eyes dart toward the hallway. “The Shadows are growing stronger. They’re hunting us now.”

The shadows surge, pouring out of the walls like living ink. The group scrambles backward as the darkness coils into the center of the room, forming a shape—tall, humanoid, but featureless, its body rippling like smoke. It moves unnaturally, shifting and reforming with every step.

Jenny screams. Bo grabs her arm, pulling her toward the doorway. “We have to move! Now!”

Angelica holds the glowing necklace tightly in her hand. “Go!”

The figure lunges forward, its shadowy limbs reaching out. Matt swings his flashlight wildly, the beam cutting through the darkness but doing nothing to stop it. “It’s not working!”

“Follow me!” Angelica shouts, her voice cutting through the panic. She bolts from the room, the others close behind her. The figure shrieks—an unnatural, bone-deep sound—and the shadows surge after them, twisting and clawing along the walls as they run.

The hallway stretches endlessly before them, the groaning of the house mingling with the sound of their pounding footsteps. The shadows pour from the walls and ceiling, forming tendrils that lash out, narrowly missing them as they sprint for the stairs.

“Where are we going?” Matt yells, his voice frantic.

“To the clock!” Angelica shouts back.

Jenny trips over a loose floorboard, crying out as Bo hauls her back to her feet. “Keep moving!” he urges, his deep voice strained.

They reach the grand staircase just as the shadows surge behind them, the darkness flooding the hallway like a tidal wave. Angelica clutches the onyx necklace, its faint glow growing brighter with every step.

The group barrels down the stairs, their breaths ragged. Matt skids to a halt near the grandfather clock in the foyer, spinning around as the darkness spills into the space above them.

Angelica raises the necklace, the light intensifying as the shadow figure begins to form again—taller, darker, its shape more defined. The edges of its limbs lash violently at the air, and the sound it emits—like a thousand whispers layered together—makes the walls tremble.

Angelica steps forward, her voice steady and commanding. “You will not stop us.”

The necklace flares, flooding the foyer with silver light. The shadow shrieks and recoils, its form splintering apart as though burned. But it doesn’t dissolve completely. Instead, it pulls back into the upper floors of the house, retreating into the walls.

Jenny slumps against the banister, gasping for breath. “Is…is it gone?”

Angelica lowers the necklace, her face grim. “Not for long.”

Bo wipes sweat from his brow, his voice low. “What is that thing? Why does it want the signs?”

Angelica turns to face them, her green eyes gleaming faintly. “Because the signs are power. And the Shadows want to keep that power buried. Each sign has within them light and shadow, we will be tasked to learn how to use the light, to overcome the shadows.”

The clock’s steady glow illuminates the constellation map etched into its surface, its patterns aligning with the Capricorn glyph that pulse faintly. Angelica traces the glowing line that stretches from the Sea Goat symbol to the clock’s frozen hands at 12:00.

“The 12 marks the Zodiac’s starting point,” she says softly, her voice steady despite the tension in the room. “It’s not just the beginning of the celestial journey—it’s a reminder of persistence and patience. Capricorn’s light shows us that time flows in cycles, guiding us toward what comes next.” She looks at the others, her green eyes resolute. “The path forward lies in understanding the balance between persistence and patience.”

Matt collapses onto the bottom step, his face pale. “Eleven more times. We have to do this eleven more times?”

Angelica doesn’t answer immediately. She looks down at the glowing onyx pendant in her hand, its surface cool and unyielding. “We have to. My mother didn’t leave us a choice.”

Bo’s voice is steady, though his expression is hard. “Where does the necklace take us next?”

Angelica looks up at the clock, its hands still frozen at 12:00. “To the Water Bearer.”

The onyx pendant pulses faintly, and in its dark surface, the faint outline of a river appears—a clue, shimmering briefly before vanishing again.

“The Nile,” Angelica says softly. “Hapi, the god of the Nile.”

Jenny stares at her. “We’re going to Egypt?”

Riddle:

“Time ticks steady, bold and bright,
A mountain’s climb, a watchful night.
With steady hoof and tail so deep,
The path unfolds where secrets sleep.
What am I?”
