Chapter 1
The morning of the vernal equinox dawns with a sky poised in perfect balance—neither fully light nor dark. The air is thick with the scent of wet earth, and the town is caught in a moment of stillness, as if something unseen is holding its breath.
Angelica feels it immediately.
She stands near the riverbank, watching the rippling water under the hazy morning light. A pulse of energy hums beneath her feet, faint but undeniable. Her onyx necklace feels warm against her skin, responding to something just beyond the veil of perception.
“Guys,” Jenny’s voice breaks the silence, urgent and sharp. “You need to see this.”
Angelica turns just as Jenny, Bo, and Matt come jogging down the slope, their faces set in varying degrees of confusion and concern.
“They’re everywhere,” Bo says, catching his breath. “It’s not just the riverbank. It’s the entire town.”
Angelica follows Jenny’s gaze to the smooth stones along the water’s edge. Some are partially buried in the mud, others jutting out like broken teeth. But what catches her attention are the glowing runes—symbols etched into the stone as though burned there by an unseen hand.
“They weren’t here yesterday,” Matt mutters. “Tell me someone’s pulling a prank.”
Jenny shakes her head. “They’re ancient. Some of them look like… zodiac symbols.”
Angelica crouches, tracing one of the glowing runes with her fingers. A pulse of warmth spreads through her skin—a recognition, as though the symbol is speaking to her in a language older than words.
She exhales. “No. This is something else.”
By noon, the town is buzzing with speculation and confusion. The symbols have appeared on buildings, trees, even the cobblestone streets, glowing faintly under the equinox sun. Some residents dismiss them as graffiti, while others whisper about omens and curses.
Angelica and the others gather in Dr. Elias Varner’s cluttered office, where the air is thick with the scent of old parchment and dust. The historian is hunched over a table, flipping through an ancient text with fingers stained from ink and time.
“This,” he says, pointing to one of the runes in a weathered manuscript, “hasn’t been seen in over a thousand years.”
Jenny leans in. “What does it mean?”
Dr. Varner’s voice is grim. “It’s a warning.”
Matt folds his arms. “Of course it is.”
Bo gestures at the open book. “A warning about what?”
Dr. Varner adjusts his glasses, eyes flicking between the text and the photos Jenny took of the runes. “The vernal equinox is a time of balance—a rare moment when light and darkness are equal. It’s said that during this celestial window, lost knowledge can resurface, but it also marks a threshold between forces that should remain in opposition.”
Angelica’s fingers tighten around her necklace. “And now that knowledge is surfacing?”
Dr. Varner nods. “Yes. And not just any knowledge. This symbol here—” he taps a Pisces glyph carved into the ancient text “—references a celestial myth lost to time.”
The room is silent. The only sound is the faint rustling of pages as Dr. Varner turns another leaf.
Matt clears his throat. “So, just to clarify: we’re dealing with thousand-year-old glowing symbols appearing out of nowhere, which may or may not be summoning cosmic secrets from the dawn of time?”
Dr. Varner doesn’t smile. “Correct.”
Jenny rubs her temple. “Awesome.”
Dr. Varner closes the book with a heavy thud. “There’s only one place where this legend can be fully deciphered. The Euphrates River.”
Angelica stiffens, a flicker of memory rushing through her. She doesn’t know why, but the name resonates.
Bo frowns. “What’s at the Euphrates?”
Dr. Varner’s voice drops to a near whisper. “A threshold.”
Matt groans. “Why do old stories always have creepy thresholds?”
Dr. Varner ignores him. “The myth says that Aphrodite and Eros once transformed into twin fish to escape Typhon, the great devourer of the gods. This story is a fragment of a much older celestial myth—one that ties into the balance between Pisces and Aries.”
Angelica’s heart pounds. The Season of Pisces—a time of intuition and hidden knowledge—is coming to an end. Aries—the sign of action and war—is rising.
Jenny’s voice is small. “What if these runes are appearing now because… this is the last chance to restore balance?”
Dr. Varner meets Angelica’s gaze. “That is exactly what I fear.”
A tense silence hangs in the air.
Then, from Angelica’s necklace, a faint pulse of warmth spreads outward. She grasps it instinctively, feeling the familiar hum beneath her skin.
The sun shifts in the sky, casting a golden reflection over the photos on the desk.
One rune flares to life, as if touched by invisible hands.
Dr. Varner exhales sharply. “We need to leave. Now.”
The moment they step outside, the air shifts—heavy, electric.
The runic symbols on the stones pulse brighter. The earth trembles.
Then, from the Euphrates, a deep, guttural sound rises.
Angelica stares toward the distant horizon.
Something ancient is waking.
