Chapter 3
The cavern feels heavier now, its silence punctuated only by the faint hum of the Pisces artifact in Angelica’s hand. The crystal sphere glows softly, its light casting rippling reflections across the smooth walls of the chamber.
For a moment, it seems the trial is over.
Jenny breaks the silence, her voice tentative. “Do you think that was it? The Trial of Duality… is it done?”
Angelica tightens her grip on the onyxpendant, her green eyes scanning the room. “The trial, maybe. But the Shadows aren’t gone.”
Matt groans, leaning against a stone pillar. “Of course they’re not. Why would anything about this be simple?”
Bo steps forward, his flashlight beam cutting through the dim light. “The thread might still be protecting us. Severing the bond between Angelica and the Shadows weakened them, but they’re not going to let us go that easily.”
Angelica nods, her gaze shifting to the water pooled at the chamber’s center. Beneath the surface, faint, jagged shapes move in slow, twisting patterns. The water ripples unnaturally, sending shivers of energy through the air.
“They’re fractured,” Angelica says softly. “Severing the thread broke their connection to me, but they’re still tied to the light—and to the prophecy.”
Jenny’s voice trembles as she steps closer to the group. “So what do we do? How do we stop them?”
The artifact in Angelica’s hand pulses, its light brightening. The redthreads connecting the group begin to glow faintly—thin and fragile, but unmistakable. Angelica’s thread, once frayed and tethered to the Shadows, is now gone, leaving only the connections between Bo, Jenny, and Matt.
Angelica studies the threads, her voice calm but resolute. “We move forward. Together.”
The water begins to churn violently, and the fractured Shadows rise from its depths. Their forms are jagged and unstable, flickering between shapes as though struggling to hold themselves together.
The largest Shadow stands at the water’s edge, towering over the group. Its voice echoes through the chamber, deep and distorted:
“You severed the thread, but you cannot sever the light. The bonds you cling to will shatter, as all things must.”
Jenny stumbles back, her voice sharp with fear. “What does that mean?”
Bo steps in front of her protectively, his jaw tight. “It’s trying to scare us. Don’t listen to it.”
The Shadow takes a step forward, its jagged limbs reaching toward the group. The red threads connecting Bo, Jenny, and Matt flicker faintly, pulsing with a rhythm that matches the artifact’s glow.
Angelica holds the artifact aloft, its light flaring. “You’re wrong. The threads aren’t fragile—they’re stronger than you know.”
The Shadow recoils slightly but doesn’t retreat. Instead, it twists and fractures, splitting into multiple smaller forms that encircle the group.
The Shadows attack, their movements erratic and chaotic. One lunges toward Jenny, its jagged form slashing through the air. Bo shoves her aside, raising his flashlight, but the beam sputters weakly.
Angelica steps forward, the artifact in her hand glowing brighter. She speaks firmly, her voice steady despite the chaos around them. “The Pisces artifact is about balance—light and shadow, strength and vulnerability. We have to use it together.”
Jenny scrambles to her feet, her eyes wide. “Together? How?”
Angelica points to the red threads, now glowing faintly between them. “The threads bind us. They’re what keep the Shadows from overwhelming us. If we work together, we can strengthen them.”
Matt dodges a tendril of shadow, frustration etched on his face. “Great. And how exactly do we do that?”
Angelica closes her eyes, focusing on the pulsing rhythm of the artifact. “Trust each other. Focus on the bond, not the fear. That’s what the trial was trying to teach us.”
One by one, the group begins to fight back—not with weapons, but by channeling their connection through the threads.
Bo moves protectively toward Jenny, his calm presence steadying her fear. The thread between them glows brighter, radiating warmth and strength.
Jenny calls out to Matt, pulling him back from the edge of the pool as a Shadow lunges toward him. The thread connecting them pulses, its light steady and unyielding.
Mattglances at Angelica, hesitation flickering across his face. Then he nods, trusting her instincts, and steps forward to stand beside her. The thread between them strengthens, its light reinforcing the glow of the artifact.
Angelica channels the energy of the artifact into the threads, her voice calm and clear. “The Shadows can’t break us. We’re stronger than they are—stronger together.”
The threads blaze with light, and the Shadows writhe in agony. Their fractured forms dissolve into the air, their whispers fading into silence.
The cavern falls still, the water settling into a smooth, reflective surface. The artifact in Angelica’s hand pulses one last time before dimming, its glow now soft and steady.
A voice echoes through the chamber, melodic and serene:
“Pisces, keeper of balance, guardian of truth. You have strengthened the bonds of the light. The path to Aries awaits.”
The water ripples faintly, and an image appears on its surface—a ram with curling horns, its body wreathed in flames.
Jenny stares at the image, her voice barely above a whisper. “Aries. That’s the next sign.”
Angelica nods, her expression resolute. “And we’ll face it together.”
As the group leaves the cavern, the red threads remain visible, their glow faint but steady. They walk in silence, the weight of the trial still fresh in their minds.
Bo finally speaks, his tone calm. “The threads… they’re stronger now. Aren’t they?”
Angelica looks at him, a faint smile on her lips. “Yes. The more we trust each other, the stronger they’ll get.”
Matt smirks faintly, though his voice is softer than usual. “Well, I guess that means we’d better keep getting along.”
Jenny laughs lightly, her first real smile in days. “No pressure, right?”
The group pauses at the edge of the lake, staring out at the horizon. Angelica glances down at the artifact in her hand, its light a reminder of the journey still ahead.
“The next sign won’t be easy,” she says. “But we’re ready.”
Bo places a hand on her shoulder. “We’ll face it. Together.”
The group moves forward, the faint glow of the red threads guiding them as they prepare for the challenges of Aries.
