The Frozen Depths – Chapter 2: The Trial of Duality

Chapter 2

The underwater chamber feels alive, pulsing with an unnatural energy that makes the air—or whatever passes for it in this submerged space—thick and heavy. The shadows circle the group, whispering words they can’t quite understand but feel in their bones.

Angelica clutches the onyx pendant, its glow flickering unevenly, the light barely holding the Shadows at bay. Her gaze locks onto the crystal sphere resting on the pedestal in the center of the room—the Pisces artifact, glowing faintly in the dim light.

“This is it,” she says softly. “The artifact is the key.”

Matt, gripping his flashlight like a weapon, glares at the circling Shadows. “Yeah? And what are we supposed to do about them?”

Jenny edges closer to Bo, her voice tight with fear. “Why aren’t they attacking? Last time, they didn’t hesitate.”

Bo scans the room, his expression calm but focused. “They’re waiting. Watching.”

Angelica’s voice is steady, though her hands tremble as she raises the pendant. “They know we’re here for the artifact. And they’re testing us.”

The largest Shadow halts its circling, standing tall and jagged in the center of the room. Its voice echoes, low and resonant, filling the chamber with a menacing hum.

“To claim the light, you must face the truth.”

The Shadows dissolve into the walls, and the chamber begins to shift. The glowing mosaics of fish swimming along the walls ripple and separate, forming mirrored panels that surround the group. The air grows colder, and the pendant’s light dims further.

Bo glances at Angelica, his voice low. “What now?”

Angelica exhales slowly. “The Trial of Duality.”

The mirrored panels shimmer, and reflections of each member of the group step forward from the glass. They are identical in appearance, but their eyes burn with faint silver light, and their expressions are cold and calculating.

Jenny takes a step back, her voice trembling. “What… what are they?”

Angelica stares at her own reflection as it steps forward, its expression sharp and unyielding. “They’re us. Or what we’re afraid of becoming.”

The reflections begin to speak, their voices cutting and precise.

Angelica’s reflection speaks, “You think you can lead them? You think this is about saving the world? No. It’s about you. It’s always been about you—your connection to the Zodiac, your mother, your destiny. You’re dragging them along for a journey that will destroy them because you’re too selfish to let go.”

Angelica stiffens, but her gaze doesn’t waver. “I’m doing what needs to be done.”

Her reflection steps closer, its silver eyes narrowing. “Are you? Or are you just afraid of being powerless?”

Bo’s reflection looks down at him, its voice calm but cutting. “You think staying silent keeps them safe? That holding back will protect them? You’re wrong. Your hesitation makes you weak, and weakness gets people killed.”

Bo clenches his fists, his jaw tight. “I’m not weak.”

The reflection tilts its head, smirking faintly. “Aren’t you? You watch, you wait, you hold back. You think you’re the protector, but when the time comes, you’ll fail them.”

Jenny’s reflection circles her, its tone mocking. “Poor, scared Jenny. Always afraid, always doubting. Do you really think you belong here? You’re a burden, nothing more. They’d be better off without you.”

Jenny’s hands tremble, her voice barely above a whisper. “That’s not true.”

The reflection leans in, its voice dripping with venom. “Isn’t it? You’re useless, and you know it.”

Matt’s reflection crosses its arms, its tone laced with disdain. “You hide behind sarcasm and cynicism because you’re terrified. You don’t believe in the Zodiac, the prophecy, or any of this, do you? You’re just waiting for a reason to run.”

Matt glares at the reflection, his voice sharp. “I’m still here, aren’t I?”

The reflection shrugs. “For now. But when it really matters, you’ll turn your back on them. You always do.”

The group is silent, the reflections’ words cutting deep. Angelica steps forward, her grip tightening on the pendant. “This is the trial,” she says, her voice steady despite the turmoil in her chest. “We have to face them. They’re not here to fight us—they’re here to make us confront the truth.”

Bo looks at his reflection, his expression hardening. “And if we don’t?”

Angelica’s gaze doesn’t waver. “Then we fail.”

The group hesitates, each of them staring at their reflections, the weight of the Shadows’ words hanging heavily in the air.

Angelica steps closer to her reflection, her voice quiet but firm. “You’re right. I’m afraid. I don’t know if I’m strong enough to do this, and I don’t know if I’m leading them the right way. But I’m trying. And I won’t stop.”

Her reflection studies her for a long moment before nodding. “Admitting the truth doesn’t make you weak. It makes you ready.”

The reflection dissolves, its light merging with the pendant.

Bo stares down his reflection, his voice calm but resolute. “I’ve held back before. I’ve made mistakes. But I won’t let fear stop me from protecting the people I care about.”

The reflection smirks faintly before fading, its light joining the pendant’s glow.

Jenny’s voice shakes as she faces her reflection. “I’ve felt like a burden my whole life. But I’m here, and I’ve fought, just like the rest of them. I’m not useless. I matter.”

Her reflection smiles softly before disappearing, its light merging with the others.

Matt squares his shoulders, glaring at his reflection. “Yeah, I’ve doubted this whole thing. And yeah, I’ve thought about running. But I didn’t. I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

The reflection nods approvingly before dissolving, its light joining the pendant.

With the trial complete, the chamber begins to shift again. The mirrored panels dissolve, and the Pisces glyph on the floor glows brightly. The crystal sphere in the center of the room pulses with light, sending ripples of energy through the temple.

Angelica steps forward, taking the sphere in her hands. The light of the artifact merges with the pendant, and a soft, melodic voice echoes through the chamber:

“Pisces, keeper of balance, guardian of truth. You have passed the Trial of Duality. The path to the next sign awaits.”

The group stands in silence, the weight of the trial still heavy on their shoulders.

Jenny finally speaks, her voice quiet. “What now?”

Angelica looks at the glowing artifact, her expression resolute. “We keep moving. The next sign is waiting.”
