The Equinox Enigma – Chapter 5: The Last Breath of Pisces

Chapter 5

The air felt heavier now, thick with something unseen, something shifting. The trembling earth beneath them had stilled, but Angelica knew—Typhon was not gone. Not yet.

The iridescent flowers still swayed gently, their celestial glow flickering like dying embers. The whisper on the wind had been unmistakable.

“The cycle begins anew.”

Angelica turned back toward the Euphrates, its surface once again deceptively calm. The unnatural churn of the water had vanished, and yet, a deep pull in her chest told her something lingered beneath. Something that had not yet been fully sealed away.

“We need to finish this,” she murmured.

Matt groaned. “You mean the running for our lives part wasn’t enough?”

Jenny shot him a look but said nothing. She felt it too.

Angelica’s onyx necklace pulsed, the warmth against her skin intensifying. She wasn’t done here.

Dr. Varner, who had remained uncharacteristically silent since their escape, finally spoke. “The balance isn’t restored.” His voice was quiet, but firm. “Pisces is still holding on. And so is Typhon.”

Bo shifted uncomfortably. “What does that mean?”

Dr. Varner studied the flowers, his fingers grazing one of the strange petals. It disintegrated at his touch, turning to fine gold dust before vanishing into the wind. “It means Pisces hasn’t let go. And unless it does… neither will Typhon.”

Angelica exhaled, lifting her gaze toward the sky. The Pisces constellation was fading, but it had not disappeared entirely.

And Aries had not fully risen.

The transition had not completed.

Angelica turned back toward the large flat stone at the center of the field—the one she had uncovered before. The runes carved into its surface now seemed to glow faintly, flickering between blue and red, as though caught between two elements.

Water and fire. Pisces and Aries.

She stepped toward it, feeling the shift in the air with each step. The closer she got, the warmer her necklace burned.

Dr. Varner followed. “This isn’t just an altar,” he said. “It’s a threshold.”

Jenny frowned. “A threshold to what?”

Dr. Varner’s expression darkened. “To the next age.”

A shiver ran down Angelica’s spine. She knew, instinctively, what had to be done.

She placed her hand over the glowing rune. The moment her fingers touched the stone, a deep vibration ran through the ground.

Words appeared beneath her palm, as if written in light, emerging from the cracks of time itself.

“Only in surrender will the cycle continue. Let the waters fade and the fire rise.”

The translation left a weight in the air.

Matt rubbed his temples. “So, what? We just tell Pisces to pack it up and go home?”

Angelica didn’t respond. Instead, she closed her eyes, focusing on the pulse of the world around her.

She could still feel Pisces’ energy—resisting, holding on.

She could feel Typhon’s presence beneath the river, still waiting, still feeding.

Pisces wasn’t yielding. It was afraid.

Her heart clenched. She understood.

For so long, Pisces had been the bridge, the keeper of secrets, the guardian of intuition and hidden truths. If it let go, what would remain? Would the next cycle bring wisdom? Or destruction?

She thought of Aphrodite and Eros, of the myth of Hatmehit and the Aries Ram.

Water had always tempered fire, keeping its destruction at bay.

But now, it was time for fire to lead.

Angelica inhaled deeply and, with absolute certainty, spoke the words aloud.

“Let the waters fade and the fire rise.”

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

The ground shook violently, the Euphrates surging upward one last time. A massive wave crested over the river, rising unnaturally high as though Pisces itself was fighting the shift.

Angelica stood her ground.

“Let go,” she whispered. “You’ve done your part. It’s time to rest.”

The water hovered for a breathless moment—then collapsed.

The river calmed. Completely.

The air grew hot, and the runes beneath her fingers shifted from blue to red.

A pulse of golden fire erupted from the altar, spiraling upward toward the sky.

Angelica stumbled back as the final remnants of Pisces’ influence vanished. The celestial flowers flickered and crumbled into dust, carried away by the wind.

The Pisces constellation disappeared.

And above them—

Aries burned bright.

A deep stillness settled over the field.

Dr. Varner let out a slow breath. “It’s done.”

Matt turned in a slow circle. “Is it just me, or does the air feel… different?”

Jenny nodded. “Lighter.”

Bo exhaled. “Like something finally let go.”

Angelica stared at the Aries altar, still glowing faintly with golden embers. She reached out and picked up a small object that had been left in the center.

A bronze pendant, shaped like a ram’s head.

It was warm to the touch.

A whisper brushed against her mind.

“The first breath ignites the path. Follow the flame.”

She clenched the pendant in her fist, turning back to the others. “We’re not done yet.”

Jenny sighed. “Of course we’re not.”

Dr. Varner studied the bronze Aries pendant, then looked back at Angelica. “The fire has been lit.”

Angelica nodded. “Then we follow it.”

As the last traces of Pisces vanished into the night, the first winds of Aries swept through the valley.

A new journey had begun.
