Chapter 7

The spacecraft glided through the inky blackness of space, its sleek white hull and gold trim shimmering faintly in the light of distant stars. The hum of the engines was a low, steady drone, almost soothing in its rhythm as Ray and the young woman approached their destination. The young woman, still haunted by the memories of Ganymede’s destruction, stood silently beside Ray, her eyes wide as the scene before them unfolded.

Ahead of them, looming out of the darkness, was a structure that seemed to defy all logic and reason—a medieval castle, perched precariously on the jagged edge of a massive, floating asteroid. The castle’s walls were rough and ancient, built from the same rocky material as the asteroid itself, giving it the appearance of having been carved directly from the celestial body. The stone towers and battlements jutted out at odd angles, as though grown organically from the asteroid’s surface, their silhouettes sharp against the backdrop of the vast, starry sky.

In the distance, a large moon hung ominously close, its cratered surface illuminated by the light of a distant sun. Its gravitational pull seemed to tug at the very fabric of reality, causing other rocky formations to drift lazily in the void, suspended in mid-air with no apparent anchor. Beyond the moon, a distant planet loomed large, its swirling clouds and rings faintly visible against the stars. The sight was both beautiful and unnerving, a surreal landscape that seemed ripped from the pages of an ancient legend.

The castle itself was eerily alive, with lights glowing warmly from the windows set deep within its walls. The illumination gave the structure an almost inviting aura, though the young woman couldn’t shake the feeling that something more sinister lurked within its ancient halls. The very air around the asteroid seemed to vibrate with an unspoken power, a force that she could feel in her bones as they drew closer.

Ray maneuvered the ship with practiced ease, guiding it toward a small, flat platform that jutted out from the side of the castle. The landing pad was barely large enough to accommodate the spacecraft, its surface made of the same rough stone as the castle itself. As they descended, the ship’s landing gear extended, making contact with the pad with a gentle thud. The engines powered down, the hum gradually fading into silence as the ship settled into place.

The young woman tore her gaze away from the haunting beauty of the scene outside and turned to Ray, her curiosity overcoming her unease. “Where are we?” she asked, her voice hushed as if afraid to disturb the quiet.

Ray stubbed out their cigarette in a small ashtray on the control panel and unstrapped themselves from the pilot’s seat. “This,” they said with a wry smile, “is the Fortress of Eos. Not exactly on any Coalition maps, but that’s the point.”

“The Fortress of Eos…” the young woman repeated, the name sounding both familiar and foreign at the same time. She had heard whispers of such places, hidden strongholds where those who opposed the Coalition gathered, but she had never imagined she would find herself in one.

Ray nodded; their expression serious now. “It’s one of the last bastions for those who haven’t bought into the Coalition’s lies. Safe haven, for now. But don’t let the looks fool you—it’s as dangerous as it is beautiful.”

The young woman felt a chill run down her spine. She had been running on pure adrenaline since leaving Ganymede, driven by the mission Seraphina had entrusted to her. Now, standing on the brink of this new and strange world, she felt the weight of uncertainty pressing down on her. What would she find in this fortress? Allies, or something far more dangerous?

Ray must have sensed her hesitation, because they placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Look, kid,” they said, their voice softer now, “I know this isn’t easy. But you’re not alone in this. There are people here who can help, who want to stop the Coalition just as much as you do. We just have to get inside and find them.”

The young woman nodded, though the unease in her stomach didn’t fully dissipate. “All right,” she agreed. “Let’s go.”

Together, they made their way to the exit ramp. As the hatch opened, a gust of cool, crisp air rushed in, carrying with it the faint scent of mineral-rich rock. The sound of distant winds howling through the asteroid’s crags filled the air, accompanied by the occasional creak and groan of the ancient structure settling into its rocky perch.

The young woman stepped out onto the landing pad, her boots making a soft crunching sound on the stone surface. She gazed up at the castle, its towers disappearing into the dark sky above. The lights in the windows flickered like stars, and she could almost imagine the ghosts of long-forgotten knights and kings wandering the halls within.

The young woman followed close behind, their steps confident and sure as they led the way toward a large, iron-bound door set into the side of the castle. The door was as old as the fortress itself, its surface pitted and scarred by centuries of exposure to the harsh environment of space. As they approached, Ray reached out and pressed a hidden panel on the wall, causing the door to slowly swing open with a deep, resonant creak.

Beyond the door lay a dimly lit corridor, its stone walls lined with ancient tapestries depicting scenes of battles and conquests from ages long past. The air inside was cool and still, carrying the faint scent of dust and old parchment. The young woman felt a shiver of anticipation as she crossed the threshold, stepping into a world that seemed to belong to another time, another reality.

Ray led her down the corridor, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls as they moved deeper into the fortress. The passageways twisted and turned, a labyrinthine maze that seemed designed to confuse any intruder. But Ray navigated the halls with ease, as if they had walked these paths a hundred times before.

Finally, they came to a stop in front of a heavy wooden door, the surface marked with strange symbols that glowed faintly in the dim light. Ray turned to the young woman, their expression grave.

“This is it,” Ray said. “The council chamber. The people inside… they’re the ones who can help us. But be prepared—these aren’t your average freedom fighters. They’ve been at this a long time, and they don’t trust easily.”

The young woman swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. She had come so far, risked so much to get here. But now, standing on the brink of the unknown, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of fear.

Still, she nodded, steeling herself for whatever lay ahead. “I’m ready,” she said, her voice steady.

Ray gave her a nod of approval and then pushed open the door, revealing the chamber beyond.

As they stepped inside, the young woman’s eyes widened at the sight before her. The chamber was vast, its ceiling lost in shadows, with tall, narrow windows that let in beams of starlight. A long table dominated the center of the room, around which sat figures cloaked in darkness, their faces obscured by the hoods of their robes.

At the head of the table, a figure rose, their silhouette outlined by the faint glow of the moon outside. The young woman could feel their gaze on her, sharp and assessing, as though weighing her very soul.

“Welcome,” the figure said, their voice echoing through the chamber. “We’ve been expecting you.”

And with those words, the young woman knew that her journey was far from over. In fact, it had only just begun.
