Chapter 13:

The next thing Charles knows, Robert is shaking him. “Wake up, Charles! Wake up!”

“What is it?” Charles rubs his eyes, squinting.

“You have to get up now; we have to go to the hospital!” Robert’s voice is urgent.

“Okay, okay, I’m up. What’s going on?”

“Here, put these on.” Robert shoves some clothes at him.

Charles starts dressing quickly. “Can you please tell me what’s going on?”

Robert helps Charles with his shoes. “I don’t have time to explain; I’ll tell you on the way. Right now, we just need to hurry.”

As Charles enters the living room, Bo comes running up, yelling, “Uncle Charles!” and wraps his arms around Charles’ legs.

Charles pats him on the back. “Hey buddy,” he says, looking at Robert, “What’s Bo doing here? Where’s Sabrina?”

“She came in a couple of hours ago, dropped Bo off, and went to the hospital to check on the baby,” Robert says, picking Bo up. “She just called and said we have to get to the hospital as soon as possible. She didn’t say much else, except that she couldn’t explain it over the phone, but not to worry, it’s not bad, but it is important. Now, let’s get a move on.”

Robert puts Bo down and starts gathering what they need. With a sense of urgency, they leave the house and head to the hospital.

When they arrive at the hospital, Sabrina meets them at the entrance. She gives Charles a big hug, stepping back with tears in her eyes. “Oh, Charles, what a nightmare. I’m so sorry I wasn’t here for you.”

Charles hugs her tightly. “Please, Sabrina, don’t feel guilty. No one could have known this would happen. Thank you so much for coming here to check on the baby.”

She pulls away and says, “No problem at all, Charles. I love you so much.” 🟢She touches his face gently. “But listen, you two need to get upstairs now; I’ll stay down here with Bo. It’s nothin’ short of a miracle!”

As Robert and Charles approach the NICU, they notice a lot of activity around his daughter’s incubator. Charles quickens his pace, his heart racing. A nurse comes running up, grabs him by the arm, and leads him toward the commotion. “You have to see this; your daughter is doing exceptionally well!”

As he reaches her incubator, he sees that all the life support systems have been removed. “What is going on?” he asks, bewildered.

“We don’t know; we can’t explain it!” The nurse goes on to explain that they had been monitoring her all morning, and how throughout the day, she has been making remarkable improvements. They had just taken his daughter off the last of her life supports and were getting ready to call Charles when Sabrina showed up.

Before the nurse walks away to get the doctor, she exclaims, “I have to say, Mr. Robinson, we have never seen a premature baby do so well in such a short amount of time.”

Charles looks down at his little girl, who is still tiny but has grown since the last time he saw her. She is breathing on her own, eating on her own, and her eyes are open, looking up at him as if she knows exactly who he is. She looks healthy and strong; it is indeed remarkable.

The doctor approaches from behind and places a reassuring hand on Charles’ shoulder. “Congratulations! Your baby is nothing short of a miracle. There’s no medical explanation I can give you, Mr. Robinson. All I can say is you have one special little girl. This case will definitely make it into the medical books. Her growth rate is off the charts, her heart rate is normal, and all her vital signs indicate she’s progressing quickly.”

Charles, still processing the news, stammers, “Thank you, thank you so much, doctor; I don’t know what to say.”

The doctor nods. “I’d like to keep her a little longer to ensure this isn’t just a fluke, but if she continues to do as well as she is now, you might be able to take her home in a couple of days.”

“A couple of days! What? Are you sure she’ll be ready?” Charles asks, his voice tinged with both excitement and fear.

The doctor smiles. “I can’t be certain of anything at this point; all I can say is that right now, she is doing exceptionally well. Of course, we will continue to monitor her and run tests to ensure there are no adverse effects from her rapid improvement. But if everything checks out, she’ll be better off at home. We will coordinate with her pediatrician for follow-ups once she’s discharged.” He shakes Charles’ hand firmly. “I’m very happy with her stats, and I don’t see any signs of discomfort or stress.” With that, he turns and walks away.

Charles calls after him, “Uh, doctor, can I have a word with you?”

The doctor stops and turns around. “Of course, I’m here to answer any questions you might have.”

Charles leans in close and whispers, “Have you noticed anything unusual about her eyes?”

Looking down at the floor, the doctor nods slowly, contemplating the question. “Yes, I have noticed how much clearer and bright they are compared to other premature infants. It’s probably due to her excessive growth rate. But you can take comfort in the fact that we have checked her out from head to toe, Mr. Robinson, and like I said, she doesn’t show any signs of discomfort, which is really all that I, as a doctor, am concerned with.”

Charles shakes his head and says, “Okay, thank you, doctor.”

He walks back over to his daughter and looks down at her. Still in shock, he mutters, “I’m not ready to take her home in a couple of days.” Panic creeps into his voice as he glances over at Robert, who looks equally stunned.

Robert, trying to steady himself, replies, “We’ll figure it out, Charles. We’ve got time to prepare, and you won’t be alone in this. We’ll get through it together.”

Just then, a nurse approaches Charles with a warm smile. “Mr. Robinson, you still haven’t given your daughter a name. Did you and your wife have one picked out?”

Charles glances at Robert; his expression is bewildered. He then looks down, feeling overwhelmed. “Just let me think about it,” he says to the nurse, his voice trembling. “I’m having a hard time processing everything right now.”

The nurse nods understandingly. “I’ll give you some time,” she says, gently touching his shoulder. “I have some paperwork for you to sign, so let me know when you’re ready.”

Turning back to his daughter, Charles can’t believe his eyes. The lid to her incubator is open, and she is wide awake, gazing up at him. It almost looks like she is… smiling? Could that be?

Another nurse walks up to him. “You can hold her if you’d like; she seems to be doing remarkably well, and babies need to be held. It’s how they bond with their parents.”

Charles looks up at the nurse, then over at Robert.

“Go ahead,” Robert encourages, tears in his eyes but a smirk on his lips. “She won’t bite; she doesn’t even have any teeth.”

The nurse gently lifts the baby from the incubator and hands her to Charles. As he cradles his precious baby girl, his heart swells, and tears stream down his face.

“Angelica,” he whispers, “that’s what I’ll name you. A gift from heaven. Little Angelica, your mom would be so proud of you, baby girl.”
