Chapter 10:

Charles begins to stir, his eyes fluttering open as a brilliant white light floods his vision. A blurry silhouette gradually takes shape—a woman with blonde hair, dressed all in white, hovering over him with concern etched across her face.

“…hear me? Can you…” Her voice is muffled at first, as if his ears are stuffed with cotton. For a moment, he sees a vision of an angel watching over him.

But as his consciousness resurfaces, the woman’s words become clearer. “Sir, can you hear me? Are you alright?” she repeats, her captivating voice unmistakably tinged with concern.

Blinking hard, Charles’s surroundings finally come into focus. He isn’t transcending some mortal plane, but rather lying on a gurney in the middle of the hallway—the “angel” merely a concerned nurse leaning over him. As the fog fully lifts, he manages a groggy nod.

“Yeah… yeah, I hear you,” he croaks out, his throat feeling drier than the Sahara.

She then asks, “Mr. Robinson, is there anyone we can call to help you get through this?”

Swinging his legs over the side of the gurney, he puts his head in his hands and rubs his face. It’s the early hours of the morning, and his mind feels foggy, heavy. The nurse hands him a cup and says, “I brought you some orange juice. You mentioned earlier that you hadn’t eaten anything; this will help.”

He shakes his head no, but the nurse is insistent. Reluctantly, he takes the cup and drinks a little. Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out his phone. Everything looks so foreign to him. He stares at it, wondering why he just can’t think straight.

The nurse asks if she can help. He unlocks his phone and hands it to her. She looks up his in case of emergency contact and calls.

A groggy voice answers. “Hello?” Robert croaks.

The nurse explains what happened and where Charles is. After a brief pause, she hands the phone back to Charles and asks, “Would you like to see your wife before they take her away?”

He nods, unable to speak.

When he walks into the room, the first thing he notices is that all the wires and tubes are gone. She’s just lying there, looking so peaceful—anyone would think she was merely sleeping. He walks up to her bedside, takes her hand, and quietly sobs.

“I don’t know how I am going to live without you,” he whispers. “I know things have been hard lately. I know I should have been more present and involved,” his voice cracks with grief. “God, how I wish I had listened to you.” He sobs uncontrollably.

His anguish fills the room. “I am going to miss you so much, Anna. You were my world, and now you’ve been taken from me.” He can hardly speak, his whole body shaking with sorrow, his heart torn in two. “I love you, Anna. I love you.”

He stands there looking down at her, thinking how even in death, her beauty remains untouched. “How did we get here, Anna? There’s so much I wanted to say, so much I’ve learned from this tragedy. We were so happy in the beginning. You have always been the love of my life. I was thinking about the morning after our first date. Do you remember it?” With tears streaming down his face, he lets out a soft chuckle.

“Remember how I arrived at your door precisely at eight? I spent so much time getting ready that morning.” The words catch in his throat. “I was really feeling myself, in my khaki shorts and white polo shirt, trying so hard to impress you by showing off my tan and muscles.” Finding it hard to speak, his words fade as he loses himself in the memory.

He rings the doorbell and waits. After a few moments, she opens the door.

“Hey you,” she smiles. “Come on in,” she says, turning to walk into the house, talking over her shoulder. “I’m almost ready. I’m moving a little slow this morning. I’m not used to drinking half a bottle of wine and staying up late. You can have a seat in the living room, or there’s coffee in the kitchen if you want a cup,” she points towards the kitchen as she walks down the hall.

He stands in the entranceway, looking around. Her home is a neat, cozy place, filled with antiques. As he makes his way into the kitchen to pour himself a cup of coffee, a painting in the hallway catches his eye. It depicts a beautiful woman with black hair cascading over her shoulders, dressed in a black gown. The painting is clearly very old, but what really grabs his attention is the striking onyx necklace around her neck—the same one Anna wears.

As Charles’s eyes move up from the necklace, he notices the woman’s eyes. “Wow,” he thinks, “those eyes definitely run in the family.”

Just then, Anna emerges from her bedroom and sees him admiring the painting. “That’s my great, great, great-grandmother,” she says proudly.

“She’s beautiful. You look just like her,” he says, looking from the painting back to Anna.

“Well, thank you,” she replies, standing a little straighter. “I’ll definitely take that as a compliment.”

He smiles. “You should.”

Lost in thought, Charles suddenly feels an arm around his shoulders. He turns to look and sees Robert standing there.

“Robert, how did you know I was here?”

“The nurse called me earlier,” Robert replies, noticing how lost and lonely his friend looks. He wraps his arms around Charles, hugging him tightly as they both sob uncontrollably.

“This can’t be happening,” Charles says through his tears, his head buried in his friend’s shoulder. “This just can’t be happening.”

“It’s okay, buddy, let it out. I’m here for you, bro. I’ll be by your side all the way,” Robert comforts him, patting his back and hugging him even tighter.

Charles pulls away and looks into Robert’s eyes. The only thing he can think to ask is, “Did you see our daughter?”

“No, I haven’t. Would you like to introduce me?” he replies.

Robert and Charles stand by Anna’s bedside as Robert says his goodbyes. Charles holds her hand, leans down, kisses her, and whispers, “I love you,” one last time.

Then, with Robert by his side, they walk out of the room together.
