Chapter 15:
Robert’s heart skips a beat, overwhelmed with happiness as he watches Charles bond with his daughter. He had been worried about how Charles would handle this moment, but seeing them together gives him chills. The baby’s eyes are so striking, a mirror image of Anna’s. As he gazes at them, a memory 💭 of when he first heard Anna’s name surfaces.
Robert had called Charles to find out why he hadn’t heard from him.
Charles had laughed, “You’re never going to believe this, but I’ve found the girl of my dreams.”
“WHAT?” Robert had yelled so loudly that Charles had to pull the phone away from his ear. He was stunned.
Charles had shared the story of how they met, and Robert couldn’t help but feel elated for his friend. But he also wondered—who was this mystery woman who had his best friend so smitten?
When the day came to meet up for their once-a-month golf game, Robert had been impatient to hear everything. He waited, tapping his foot as the minutes ticked by.
Finally, he spotted Charles ambling up the path, a dreamy smile plastered across his face. “Dude, what took you so long?” Robert had demanded. “I’ve been waiting forever!”
Charles ran a hand through his tousled hair sheepishly. “Sorry, I was on the phone with Anna, and I lost track of time.”
Robert arched an eyebrow. In all their years of friendship, he had never seen Charles this distracted—or this deliriously happy. As they set off in the golf cart, Charles talked nonstop about Anna—her wit, her charm, her beauty.
After eighteen holes of Anna this and Anna that, Charles had dropped a bombshell: “So, I asked her to marry me.”
Robert had slammed on the brakes and stared at his friend. Where had the old Charles gone? Who was this starry-eyed romantic? Robert barely recognized him.
“Look, as soon as you meet Anna, you’ll understand,” Charles had said, his eyes twinkling. “She’s incredible—funny, kind, just so easy to be around. Which reminds me…” He had paused, barely containing his grin. “We’re moving to Florida. I proposed and asked her to move to Florida with me, and she said yes!”
“Florida?” Robert had sputtered. “Why Florida?”
Charles had explained that his job was transferring him down south, and he had no choice but to go. “So, whaddya say?” he had asked hopefully. “Will you be my best man?”
As the news washed over him, Robert had broken into a broad smile. “Of course, I’ll be your best man, you idiot!” Robert had pulled Charles into a bear hug, choking back a wave of sadness. He was thrilled for his friend, but the thought of Charles leaving stung.
Now, seeing Charles with his daughter brings back those memories, filling Robert with a mix of nostalgia and hope. This moment is a new beginning, one that Anna would have cherished.
Robert is deep in thought when he hears his name being called. “Robert! Robert!”
He looks up to see Sabrina standing there. “I’ve been trying to catch your attention for like five minutes,” she says, irritated. She is standing at the entrance of the NICU, exasperation etched across her face.
He smiles, walks over, and gives her a kiss. “I’m sorry, sweetheart; I just have a lot on my mind right now. Where’s Bo?”
“He’s spending the night with his friend Jason from school. It just so happens he’s having a sleepover birthday party. I didn’t think Bo would be able to make it since we were supposed to be out of town, but when I explained everything to Barbara, she was more than happy to have Bo spend the night with them,” Sabrina explains.
“Oh, good.” Robert is relieved. He needs Sabrina there; he is spent.
The nurse walks over to them to let them know they are both welcome to come in due to the special circumstances.
Sabrina thanks her, then walks over to where Charles is holding Angelica and rubs his back. “She’s so beautiful, Charles. What a miracle she is.”
Charles leans against her, too choked up to talk; tears are flowing down his face.
“Listen, Charles, I want you to go back to our house with Robert and get some rest; I’ll stay here with the baby.”
“Angelica,” Charles says.
“What?” Sabrina looks at him.
“Angelica. I named her Angelica.” It is all he can say.
“That’s such a beautiful name. Anna would have loved it.”
Robert walks up to them. “What’s going on?”
“I was just telling Charles that I thought the two of you should go back to our house and get some rest,” Sabrina explains. “I’ll stay here with… Angelica.”
“Yes, great idea,” Robert agrees; he is exhausted.
Charles just stands there looking down at his daughter; he doesn’t want to let her go. She is comforting to him.
“Charles?” Robert questions.
Sabrina starts rubbing his back again. “Charles, would you mind if I held Angelica?”
He looks at her, then back at Angelica. “Uh, yeah, sure,” he says, then proceeds to hand her over.
Sabrina takes her from his arms and starts rocking her. Angelica opens her eyes, and they nearly knock her over. “Wow, pretty girl,” she murmurs, looking down at her. “You sure do have some powerful-looking eyes. Simply beautiful.” She walks over to a reclining chair the nurses have set up by Angelica’s incubator and sits down, holding her close to her chest.
Charles follows one of the nurses back to the nurse’s station to sign some documents, then walks back over to say goodbye to Sabrina. Then, with Robert by his side, they leave the hospital together.
Continue to Chapter 16
In Chapter 16, Sabrina reflects on her life changes brought by her friendship with Anna and her marriage to Robert. As she holds Anna’s newborn daughter, Angelica, she feels a profound connection and responsibility. Memories of her grandmother and a mysterious trunk hint at Angelica’s special lineage and purpose, prompting Sabrina to protect and nurture her.
