Chapter 17:

Charles is both apprehensive and excited to be going home. It feels like a lifetime since he last stepped into his house. He knows it won’t be the same without Anna, but he also knows he has to face the inevitable. As he turns the corner onto his street, he is shocked to see reporters swarming his lawn.

“What the hell?” he whispers.

As he pulls into the driveway, they come running up to his car, microphones in hand, screaming out questions, taking pictures, and filming him. His automatic garage door opens, and he drives into the garage, feeling overwhelmed as the door closes behind him, shutting out the chaotic noise.

Sitting in his car for a moment, he takes a deep breath, trying to settle himself. This is all spiraling out of control. Finally, with his heart pounding, he steps inside the house. The emptiness greets him like a ghostly void. It’s cold, still, deafeningly silent.

Curious, he walks over to the window and peeks outside. The circus on his front lawn still rages. Feeling drained, he drops onto the couch and turns on the TV. Every channel is reporting on “The Miracle Baby.” Charles is dumbfounded.

Pulling out his phone, he dials Robert. “Have you turned on your TV today?”

“No,” Robert replies, grabbing the remote.

The screen flickers to life with a reporter’s voice:

“She is being dubbed ‘The Miracle Baby,’ born two months premature, now completely off life support, eating on her own, and said to be growing at an exponential rate, according to hospital staff.”

A nurse appears on the screen, standing outside the hospital. “We had been monitoring her all morning, and by the afternoon, we were able to remove all life support. Since then, she has doubled in size and weight; she truly is a miracle.”

“There you have it, folks,” the reporter concludes. “An actual miracle has taken place at the Cape Canaveral Hospital here in Cape Canaveral, Florida.”

“What the hell?” Robert mutters as the next scene shows Charles’ house, swarmed with reporters.

“I’ll be right there, buddy,” Robert says, hanging up.

Charles wanders aimlessly through the house, ending up in the nursery. The unfinished crib, the unopened baby gifts, the rocking chair that Anna never got to sit in—it all hits him like a tidal wave. He runs a hand through his hair, his breath shallow as he takes it all in. The room was supposed to be perfect. Now, it feels like a ghost of a dream that will never be fully realized.

He peers through the nursery window. The reporters are still out there. The weight of everything settles in his chest. His to-do list seems impossible—assembling the crib, sterilizing bottles, installing the car seat, preparing for Angelica’s arrival. The media frenzy outside only makes the task feel more suffocating.

But Angelica deserves better than this chaos. She deserves a home filled with love and security. Charles steels himself. Grief can wait—right now, he has work to do.

Meanwhile, outside, Robert pulls into the driveway. As a well-known journalist, he’s used to dealing with the press, but this feels different. The moment he steps out of the car, reporters rush at him.

“Robert, what can you tell us about ‘The Miracle Baby’ and the circumstances regarding the death of her mother?”

Flashing his most disarming smile, Robert raises a hand to silence them. “I’m pleased to report the baby is thriving and growing stronger by the day.” He allows the murmurs of relief to settle before delivering the gut-punch. “Tragically, her mother, Anna, has passed away due to complications from childbirth.”

A hush falls over the crowd, punctuated by the clicks of cameras.

Robert steadies himself, shoulders squared. “Anna suffered extreme blood loss caused by age-related complications. The only way to save the baby was an emergency C-section.”

To silence the barrage of follow-up questions, he holds up a solemn hand. “Charles has been my closest friend since high school, and I’m here today as his voice. As you can imagine, while overjoyed that his daughter pulled through, he is utterly devastated by the loss of his beloved wife of ten years.”

His voice catches, but he continues, “He’s surrounded by loved ones, and we’re doing everything we can to create a nurturing environment for his daughter amidst the pain and grief. I know this is a big story, but I’m imploring you—grant us some space and dignity as we navigate this.”

His eyes blaze with certainty. “I vow to keep you updated as developments unfold. But for now, I ask that you please show some humanity and allow us to process this in private. Thank you.”

With that, he turns on his heel and strides toward the house, the cameras flashing behind him. He knows he can’t keep them at bay forever, but he can at least buy Charles some time.

Word spreads of Angelica’s miraculous survival, and soon, an outpouring of love floods into Charles’ quiet neighborhood. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers arrive, offering support 🔗.

Cars line the street, filled with casserole dishes, baby supplies, and extra hands ready to help. Charles opens the front door to a steady stream of solemn hugs and “Hey man, whatever you need.” Before he knows it, an industrious team of helpers has taken over—assembling furniture, setting up a nursery, filling the house with the warmth it had been missing.

The living room echoes with the buzz of power tools and the clatter of cookware as meals are prepped. In the nursery, volunteers paint delicate murals of trees, animals, and stars along the violet walls, creating a dreamland fit for a miracle child.

By sunset, the last helpers trickle out, leaving Charles emotionally exhausted but deeply moved. His community has built him and Angelica a home filled with love.

Utterly spent, he collapses onto his bed, inhaling the scent of fresh paint, clean linens, and the warmth of those who care. As deep sleep claims him, one thought endures—Angelica will always know love.

Meanwhile, Robert and Sabrina shift into full logistical mode. They handle funeral arrangements, contact relatives, and secure accommodations for those flying in.

In between, Sabrina infuses the house with warmth—arranging fresh flowers, setting out calming fragrances, and curating a playlist of soft, meditative music. Robert ensures the fridge stays stocked, the household runs smoothly, and that Charles doesn’t collapse under the weight of it all.

Then, the call comes—Angelica is cleared to come home.

Though joy and sorrow mingle in his heart, Charles marvels at his daughter’s resilience. The doctors had expected her to need more time, yet she has surpassed all expectations. She is a fighter, just like her mother.

On the day of her discharge, Charles stands at the NICU window, watching his daughter sleep peacefully. The premature newborn who entered the world under such harrowing circumstances is now strong, thriving.

As he caresses the glass, his heart swells. His life has been rewritten by tragedy, but Angelica is the hopeful new chapter. He vows to raise her with the love and joy Anna would have given her. Their dream was shattered, but Angelica’s strength promises a new beginning.

With tears in his eyes, he whispers, “Let’s go home, baby girl.”
