The Red Threads of Fate Egypt – Chapter 2: Beneath the Nile

The dark, stone passageway descends steeply into the earth, the faint glow of the onyx pendant casting silver light across the slick walls. The air grows colder with every step, and the sound of rushing water echoes louder, reverberating like a heartbeat around them.

Angelica leads the way, her footsteps steady despite the unease tightening her chest. Bo follows close behind, his flashlight cutting through the shadows. Jenny and Matt bring up the rear, their movements cautious, their breaths misting in the frigid air.

“Does anyone else feel like we’re walking into a tomb?” Matt mutters, his voice tight with nerves.

Jenny glances back, her brow furrowed. “Would you stop saying things like that?”

“It’s not like I’m wrong,” Matt snaps, but he falls silent as the group reaches the bottom of the passage.

The stone corridor opens into a vast underground chamber, its walls carved with intricate hieroglyphs that glimmer faintly in the pendant’s light. The floor is slick with water, shallow pools reflecting the carvings above like mirrored constellations.

In the center of the chamber stands a massive stone archway, its edges etched with celestial symbols and Zodiac markings. The Aquarius glyph glows faintly at the top of the arch, and beneath it, a pedestal holds a stone bowl filled with dark, still water.

Jenny steps closer, her voice barely above a whisper. “This is incredible… it’s like something out of a myth.”

Angelica nods, her gaze fixed on the glowing glyph. “It’s a sanctuary. A place tied to the Water Bearer.”

Bo inspects the pedestal, his flashlight casting long shadows across the chamber. “What do we do now? There’s nothing here but water and symbols.”

Angelica approaches the bowl, the pendant pulsing faintly in her hand. She holds it above the water, and the liquid begins to ripple, its surface shifting to reveal a faint red thread swirling beneath.

“It’s another thread,” she murmurs.

Matt crosses his arms, his brow furrowed. “Great. More threads. What does this one want us to do—fish it out?”

Angelica ignores him. She dips the pendant into the water, and a sudden surge of light bursts from the bowl, casting the chamber into sharp relief. The red thread twists and turns, unraveling as if alive, and the room begins to tremble.

The thread spins outward, weaving itself into shapes that float in the air—words, images, and scenes that flicker like holograms. The group watches in stunned silence as the thread forms a glowing figure, translucent but unmistakable: a celestial being with flowing robes and eyes like starlight.

Jenny gasps. “Is that…?”

“E,” Angelica whispers, recognizing the figure described in the letters they found at the estate.

The celestial being looks toward them, their expression serene but tinged with sorrow. When they speak, their voice is soft and resonant, echoing in the chamber.

“If you have come this far, then you carry the light of the onyx. You must be warned: the path you follow is one of sacrifice.”

Angelica steps forward. “What sacrifice? What do you mean?”

The figure flickers, the red thread unraveling further to form an image of two hands intertwined—one celestial, one human. The celestial voice continues:

“The necklace binds you to the signs, but it also binds you to their fate. Love and loss, light and shadow—these are the threads that weave the prophecy. To awaken the signs, you must be willing to sever one for the sake of the other.”

Bo’s brow furrows. “Sever? What does that mean?”

The figure doesn’t answer. Instead, the red thread unravels completely, forming a final image: a frozen lake, its surface etched with the symbols of the Zodiac. At the lake’s center, a glowing object lies submerged beneath the ice.

Before the group can process what they’ve seen, the chamber trembles violently. The faint light of the Aquarius glyph flares, and the Shadows surge into the room.

This time, their forms are more distinct—humanoid shapes with jagged edges that ripple and shift like living ink. Their eyes burn with malice, and their movements are coordinated, blocking the exits as they advance.

Jenny stumbles back, her voice rising in panic. “They’re everywhere!”

Matt swings his flashlight toward the nearest Shadow, but the beam sputters uselessly. “Angelica, do something!”

Angelica grips the onyx pendant tightly, its light growing brighter as she steps forward. The Shadows hesitate, their forms flickering in the silvery glow.

“They’re trying to stop us,” Angelica says, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her. “They don’t want us to reach the signs.”

Bo moves to her side, holding a fallen piece of stone as a makeshift weapon. “Then we can’t let them stop us.”

The Shadows lunge, their forms twisting into tendrils that lash out at the group. Angelica raises the pendant, its light exploding outward in a burst that scatters the Shadows momentarily.

But they reform quickly, their attacks growing fiercer. One Shadow wraps its tendrils around Jenny’s wrist, pulling her toward the dark edges of the chamber.

“Jenny!” Bo shouts, swinging the stone at the tendrils. It passes through them harmlessly, but the distraction is enough for Angelica to direct the pendant’s light toward Jenny, severing the connection.

“We can’t hold them off forever,” Matt says, panting as he fends off another Shadow with wild swings of his flashlight.

Angelica looks toward the glowing archway, realization dawning. “The signs hold the answer. We have to complete the ritual.”

Angelica steps toward the pedestal, holding the pendant over the bowl of water again. She whispers a prayer under her breath—words she doesn’t fully understand but feels drawn to:

“Aquarius, bearer of renewal, keeper of the flow, guide us to the light beneath the waters.”

The pendant flares, and the bowl’s water overflows, spilling onto the chamber floor. The liquid races toward the archway, filling the carvings with glowing light. The Aquarius glyph shines brilliantly, and the Shadows howl as the light cuts through them like blades.

One by one, the Shadows dissolve into the air, their forms breaking apart under the intensity of the glow. The chamber falls silent, the only sound the faint ripple of water as it settles.

Angelica turns to the others, her expression calm but resolute. “The lake in the vision—that’s where the next sign is. We’re being drawn to Pisces.”

Jenny hugs her arms around herself, her voice shaky. “And the sacrifice? What does that mean?”

Angelica doesn’t answer immediately. She looks down at the pendant in her hand, its glow now subdued. “We’ll find out soon enough.”

The red thread flickers once more, weaving itself into an arrow that points back up the passageway. Their path is clear, but the danger is far from over.
