Chapter 2: A Love Lost to the Stars
The air in the hidden room is thick, carrying the weight of forgotten stories. Dust settles on every surface, and the faint scent of aged parchment lingers, mingling with the damp chill of the stone chamber. The group stands in silence, the glow of the red thread illuminating the carved frescoes on the walls.
Angelica gently places the letters from upstairs on a table near the center of the room. The bronze goblet they discovered earlier sits nearby, its surface etched with the faint outline of the Aquarius glyph.
Jenny steps closer, her eyes scanning the frescoes. The images show a mortal youth ascending into the heavens, a golden chalice in his hand, as celestial beings watch from above. “That’s Ganymede, isn’t it?” she asks, her voice soft but certain.
Angelica nods, her gaze fixed on the central figure. “He was chosen by Zeus to serve as the cupbearer of the gods. Immortalized, but…” She hesitates, her voice trailing off.
“Trapped,” Bo finishes for her, his tone even. “That’s what it looks like. Chosen or not, he didn’t have a choice.”
Angelica carefully unfolds one of the letters, the parchment brittle beneath her fingers. She reads aloud, her voice steady despite the strange pull of the words:
“To the one who bore the burden of the gods, know that your story will not be forgotten. You were chosen not for your beauty alone, but for the strength of your heart and the purity of your soul. Your legacy lives on, bound by the stars and the thread of fate.”
Jenny leans against the table, frowning. “Bound by the thread of fate? That sounds like more than just poetic language.”
Angelica glances down at the letter, her green eyes dark with thought. “Ganymede wasn’t taken just because he was beautiful. The gods saw something else in him—something they wanted to control.”
She picks up another letter, this one bearing a faint seal in the shape of the Aquarius constellation. As she begins to read, the story of Ganymede unfolds:
Ganymede, a mortal youth of extraordinary beauty and strength, was chosen by Zeus to serve as the cupbearer of the gods. The role granted him immortality, but at a terrible cost. He was torn from his home and those he loved, bound to a life of servitude in Olympus.
The letters speak of Erythea, a celestial being who loved Ganymede deeply but was forbidden to intervene in his fate. Her sorrow and anger bleed through the words, each one a lament for the connection they lost and the choices that tore them apart.
Angelica’s voice falters as she reads: “In love, he was bound; in duty, he was chained. His story is ours, and ours is his. Seek the chalice, and you will find the truth of the stars.”
Angelica lowers the letter, her thoughts distant. Ganymede’s story resonates deeply, stirring memories of her mother’s sacrifice. Anna had given up everything—her freedom, her life—to protect Angelica and ensure her destiny was fulfilled.
Jenny notices her expression and steps closer. “You okay?”
Angelica nods slowly. “It’s just… it feels familiar. My mother made sacrifices like Erythea did, and I keep wondering if I’ll have to make those same kinds of choices.”
The group falls silent, the weight of the letters pressing down on them.
Bo finally breaks the tension, his voice calm but firm. “If we’re learning anything from this, it’s that none of us are in this alone. Whatever comes next, we’ll face it together.”
Angelica offers a faint smile, her grip tightening on the onyx necklace. “Thanks, Bo.”
The soft hum of the onyx necklace grows stronger as Angelica turns back to the letters. One bears a cryptic inscription, its faded ink shimmering faintly in the dim light: “To protect your legacy, I leave you this gift—a shard born of the heavens. May it guide those who follow the thread to the truth hidden within the stars.”
Angelica lifts the necklace, its warmth pulsing against her palm. “A shard born of the heavens,” she murmurs. “It’s not just a keepsake. It’s a key. The question is, what does it unlock?”
Matt glances at the fresco, his tone skeptical. “If it’s a key, maybe it opens something out there. That chalice in Ganymede’s hand? Seems important.”
Bo tilts his head toward the goblet on the table. “We’ve got one right here. Think it’s the same one?”
Angelica studies the bronze goblet, her fingers brushing the carved Aquarius glyph. The red thread begins to glow brighter, pulling their attention toward the far side of the room.
The thread winds its way toward a balcony overlooking the sea, its glow reflecting off the crumbling walls as it moves. The group follows cautiously, stepping into the cool night air.
The Aegean stretches out before them, bathed in moonlight. Beneath the cliffs, the Aquarius glyph shimmers faintly, its lines etched into the stone as if carved by starlight itself.
Jenny’s breath catches as she points. “That’s it, isn’t it? That’s where we’re supposed to go.”
Angelica nods, the hum of the necklace growing stronger as she stares at the glowing symbol. “The glyph is our next step. We’ll find the answers there.”
The waves crash far below, the sound steady and rhythmic, like the ticking of a clock counting down to an unseen deadline. The thread flickers briefly before its glow fades entirely, leaving only the faint light of the moon to guide them.
