Chapter 3
The cliffside trail is narrow and steep, carved into the rocky face of the bluff. The Aegean Sea stretches endlessly to their left, its dark waters shimmering faintly under the moonlight. A faint wind carries the tang of salt and the faint whisper of waves crashing far below.
The red thread glows faintly ahead of them, weaving its way down the treacherous path like a flickering guide. Angelica takes the lead, her grip on the onyx necklace firm as its steady hum fills the quiet air.
Jenny steps carefully, her voice tight. “This is insane. If we slip, it’s straight into the ocean.”
Bo steadies her with a hand on her shoulder. “Keep your focus. One step at a time.”
Matt, trailing at the back, mutters under his breath, “Right, because walking a death trap at night is totally fine.”
Angelica glances back at him, her tone firm. “We don’t have a choice. The thread is leading us, and if we stop now, we’ll never figure out what’s next.”
The path leads to a narrow opening in the cliff, partially obscured by overgrown vines and jagged rocks. The thread disappears inside, its glow reflecting off the damp stone walls.
Angelica pulls the vines aside, revealing a hidden sea cave shrouded in darkness. The faint sound of water dripping echoes through the space, and the air is cool and damp.
Jenny hesitates at the entrance, peering into the gloom. “Are we really going in there?”
Angelica steps forward, the glow of the necklace lighting her way. “Yes. Stay close.”
The group follows the thread deeper into the cave, the walls narrowing and the floor slick with seawater. The glow leads them to a large submerged altar, its surface etched with celestial symbols.
Angelica stops short, her breath catching. “This is it.”
The altar is carved from smooth stone, its surface adorned with intricate depictions of the Aquarius glyph and a constellation that matches the seal on the letters. At its center, a shallow basin holds still, crystalline water that seems to glow faintly.
Bo studies the carvings, his flashlight illuminating the details. “These symbols… they’re telling a story.”
Angelica leans closer, her fingers tracing the lines of the carvings. The images depict Ganymede’s ascension, showing Zeus reaching down from Olympus to lift the mortal youth into the heavens.
Further along the altar, the carvings shift, showing red threads stretching from Ganymede to the stars. The threads wind around celestial figures, binding them to the mortal world below.
Jenny steps beside Angelica, her voice barely above a whisper. “The threads of fate… They’re what connect us, aren’t they? To each other. To this.”
Angelica nods, her expression grim. “It’s more than that. The threads bind the celestial beings to the mortal realm. Ganymede’s story isn’t just about him—it’s about what he left behind.”
The glow of the necklace intensifies, and Angelica picks up another letter resting at the base of the altar. Its text is faded but legible: “The shard you carry is more than a key. It is a conduit, capable of channeling the power of the stars. But its full strength can only be unlocked through an act of true sacrifice. To wield it is to give, not take.”
The group falls silent as the weight of the words settles over them.
Matt breaks the silence, his tone uneasy. “Sacrifice? What kind of sacrifice are we talking about here?”
Bo crosses his arms, his expression serious. “Whatever it is, it’s not going to be easy. Nothing about this has been.”
Jenny wraps her arms around herself, her voice trembling. “What if… what if it means losing each other? What if the threads—” She cuts herself off, unable to finish the thought.
Angelica looks at the necklace in her hand, the warmth of its hum a constant reminder of the burden she carries. “I don’t know what it means yet. But we don’t have a choice. If this is part of the prophecy, we have to see it through.”
Bo steps closer, his tone calm. “You’re not in this alone, Angelica. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together.”
Her lips curve into a faint smile, but the worry in her eyes doesn’t fade. “Thanks, Bo. I just hope we’re ready for what’s coming.”
As the group turns to leave the cave, the red thread snaps taut, pulling Angelica back toward the altar.
The necklace flares brightly, its light reflecting off the still water in the basin. The glow intensifies, and the group freezes as the image of a figure begins to form above the altar.
Ganymede’s figure appears, his translucent form bathed in celestial light. His expression is calm but somber as his voice fills the cavern: “Beware the price of what you seek.”
The vision fades, and the glow of the necklace dims. The cavern falls into silence, leaving the group standing in the dark, the weight of the warning pressing down on them.
Angelica looks down at the necklace, its warmth now a faint thrum against her palm. “We have to keep moving,” she says quietly. “We’re not done yet.”
