Chapter 4:
The restaurant is a haven of warmth and elegance. Soft, ambient lighting casts a romantic glow over the candlelit tables, each adorned with a small bouquet of fresh flowers. The gentle hum of conversations and the clinking of glasses fill the air, mingling with the soft strains of classical music. Charles and Anna, greeted warmly by the hostess, are led to a cozy corner table. The elegant decor and inviting atmosphere set the perfect stage for their anniversary celebration.
As they settle into their seats, Charles requests a wine list. Anna gasps, a hand instinctively going to her pregnant belly. “Charles! You know I can’t drink wine in my condition.”
Trying to smooth things over, Charles suggests making an exception for the occasion with just one glass.
Anna agrees, then excuses herself to use the restroom. Charles verifies the wine selection, and the waiter pours two glasses, placing them on the table. As he waits for Anna to return, Joel Peterson, a new colleague from work, suddenly joins him, sliding into Anna’s seat.
“Hey, Charles. Fancy meeting you here,” Joel says with a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.
Charles nods, trying to hide his unease. “Joel, this is a surprise. We’re celebrating our anniversary tonight.”
Joel glances around the restaurant, his gaze lingering on a table across the room. “I see our commander is here too, but not with his wife.”
Curious, Charles turns to look. At that moment, Joel swiftly pours something into Anna’s wine glass, his movements quick and deliberate.
When Anna returns, she finds Joel in her seat. Politely, but with a hint of unease, she smiles. “Hello, Joel. I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Just a coincidence,” Joel replies smoothly. “Happy anniversary, by the way.”
“Thank you,” Anna says, her eyes flickering to Charles as she takes her seat.
As they resume their dinner, Anna cheerfully toasts, “Cheers to us,” and takes a sip of her wine. She looks radiant amidst the romantic candlelight, her happiness infectious. But suddenly, she clutches her side in pain, her face contorting in agony.
Charles rushes to her side.
“I think I’m in labor,” Anna gasps. “We need to go to the hospital.” 🔴
The serene and romantic atmosphere of the restaurant shatters into chaos. Charles helps Anna to her feet, his heart pounding with fear. They hurry out of the restaurant, leaving Joel watching them with a strange, unreadable expression.
Now, sitting in the hospital waiting room, Charles’s head is in his hands. The cold, fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows, amplifying his sense of isolation, he berates himself, “How could I have been so careless?” He questions if all this has happened over a mere glass of wine.
He then, recalls the frantic ride to the hospital. “Those weren’t regular contractions she was having,” he thinks. “She was in constant pain; please let her be alright.”
He glances around the waiting room, the elegance of the restaurant now a distant memory. The hospital is cold and clinical, the decor impersonal and unwelcoming. The stark contrast between the two settings deepens his despair.
Just as the thought crosses his mind, the surgeon enters the waiting room and walks over to where Charles is sitting. He stands up so fast it gives him a head rush, throwing him off balance.
The doctor reaches out to steady him. “Are you okay?”
“I’m just a little jittery. It’s been a long night. How’s my wife?” Concern is etched in his voice as he speaks.
“Your wife has had severe hemorrhaging; we’ve stopped the bleeding, and she’s now in the Intensive Care Unit. She has lost a lot of blood. We’ve managed to stabilize her, but she’s in very critical condition. We were forced to take your baby by cesarean section, but she’s doing fine. All her vitals check out. Since she’s premature, we’ve had to put her in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Mr. Robinson, do you recall if your wife has had any trauma or might have taken anything that could have caused this?”
“No, I don’t. I mean, she did have a couple of sips of wine at the restaurant. Could that be the cause?” The fear is evident in his voice.
The surgeon shakes his head. “No, that’s highly unlikely.”
“She just had a doctor’s visit a couple of days ago, and she said everything was fine!” Charles blurts out.
The doctor sighs. “This pregnancy is considered high risk due to your wife’s age, Mr. Robinson. There is always the risk of bleeding complications associated with getting pregnant after the age of thirty-five.”
Charles interrupts, “She’s a healthy, active woman. She eats right, exercises, takes her vitamins, and sees her doctor regularly. How could this have happened?”
“We really don’t have any answers for you right now. We are running some tests on her, and when we get the results, we’ll have more information for you. I can only imagine how you feel, Mr. Robinson. I’ve been in contact with her obstetrician, and I understand what you’re saying, but in a small percentage of cases, even healthy women have complications.”
The only thing left for him to say is, “I need to see my wife.” Tears flow down his face.
“Yes,” the doctor says, turning toward the nurse standing behind him. “Ms. Atkins will escort you to her. Please know we are doing everything possible to make sure your wife goes home soon.” He pats Charles on the shoulder, then turns and walks away.
Continue to Chapter 5
Deep within a hidden underground facility, a tense meeting unfolded among high-ranking military officials, reptilian entities, and grey beings, all gathered to address a mission that had gone disastrously wrong. General Marcus Hightower, seething with anger, demanded answers from the nervous scientists who had failed to eliminate the newborn child while keeping the mother unharmed. The child’s resilience and the mother’s connection to mystical forces had complicated the mission, drawing unwanted attention. Amidst the harsh, fluorescent-lit room, a chilling decision was made: to eliminate the mother, Anna, whose knowledge and powers now posed a significant threat to their covert agenda. With grim resolve, the group finalized their plans, increasing surveillance and preparing for a new, more ruthless operation to ensure the infant and her mother would not endanger their carefully orchestrated timeline. As the operatives prepared for action, the stakes were higher than ever, and failure was no longer an option. Meanwhile, Charles remained unaware of the deadly forces gathering against his family, focused solely on Anna’s recovery and the safety of their newborn daughter. The battle for survival had only just begun.
