Chapter 14:
Anna’s surroundings materialize like a dream—an ethereal mist seems to breathe and pulse with brilliant, radiant light. As she turns in endless circles, she feels embraced by a familiar warmth. This place defies all earthly logic and senses.
Gazing down, she realizes with a start that her bare feet aren’t rooted to any solid surface. And yet, she doesn’t feel the effects of floating or even weightlessness. No, this plane of existence cradles her in balanced stability, as if the very air itself has taken on a semi-solid form, holding her up.
It may look from the outside like she is simply standing amidst the swirling clouds, but Anna understands the mist isn’t an inanimate veil—it lives and pulses with a resonant, loving energy field. She can’t quite explain how she feels this essence, nor can she identify its source. It simply emanates from the ether itself, an inexplicable life force, giving her a sense of profound belonging.
As the radiant field envelops her, Anna closes her eyes and surrenders fully to the embrace, allowing the mist to cocoon her in its soothing power. In this place, separated from linear time and reality, she doesn’t need the trappings of earthly things like language or gravity. Here, the waves of light and energy speak directly to her soul in a language richer and more primal than words could ever convey.
As Anna surrenders to the mist’s embrace, the vapor begins to swirl and condense into a familiar scene. She instantly recognizes the cozy studio where her mother practiced her craft—every burnished wooden surface, every stick of well-loved furniture exuding warmth and happy memories.
Five-year-old Anna materializes, her miniature self perched cross-legged on the floor amidst a rainbow of glittering gemstones. With painstaking care, her tiny hands sort the precious rocks into organized piles. Nearby, her mother sits at the battered oak table, weaving the colorful gems into intricate bohemian jewelry.
As if on cue, she rises and crosses the room to join her little protégé on the faded Persian rug. With a gentle smile, she gathers young Anna in a soothing embrace and leans in close.
“Anna, darling, make sure you pay close attention to each little stone as you sort them into piles,” she murmurs, picking up an emerald and holding it up in front of them. “See this emerald?”

Young Anna nods, her gaze locked on the gem catching the afternoon sunlight.
“Emeralds like this one are what we call precious gems. Do you know why, sweetheart?” her mother asks.
Anna shakes her head slowly, mesmerized as the forest-green stone flashes between her mother’s fingers.
“Because they are alive,” she whispers, trailing off in a hush. “Each and every one has its own special little energy signature. If you hold it close and pay attention… they will speak to your soul.”
The vision blurs as the memory of her mother’s gentle voice brings back a wellspring of belonging and unconditional love. Anna cups the emerald in her miniature palm, feeling the gem’s energy reverberate through her body.
“Close your eyes now, darling,” her mother whispers, so soft it barely registers. “Feel the vibration? Let it sink into your heart.”
Anna closes her eyes and feels the warmth bloom in her spirit like the first breath of spring after a brutal winter. The stone’s vibrations pulse directly into her soul, cradling her in a restorative embrace.
With a gasp, Anna’s eyes open, tears streaking down her face in awe and remembrance. Her mother’s lessons about jewelry had been so much more—a transmission of ancient wisdom, of humankind’s profound connection to the Earth’s heart. In this state of being, Anna finally grasps the full significance of what her mother had tried to impart.
The mist starts to swirl again, transporting Anna to another vivid memory from her childhood. She is seven years old now, pigtails bouncing as her miniature self bursts through the front door in a blur of tears and hiccupping sobs. She runs to her room and flings herself facedown onto her bed, tiny body quaking with anguished outbursts.
Moments later, her mother walks into the room and gently sits on the edge of the bed. “What’s the matter, sweetheart? It looks like you had a bad day at school,” her voice soothes as she rubs Anna’s back.
Anna rolls over to face her mother, big green eyes swollen and reddened, cheeks streaked with tears. She takes a deep, shuddering breath. “The… the girls were so cruel to me, Mama,” she finally wails, chest heaving. “They made fun of me!”
Her mother smooths back the wild tendrils escaping Anna’s disheveled hair and speaks gently. “Do you want to talk about it?”
With a nod, Anna pushes herself upright, curling her knees to her chest. “I… I tried to tell them what you taught me about the stones, Mama! How they’re alive with energy that speaks to your soul if you listen close…”
Her face wrinkles again at the recollection. “But they just laughed and laughed, calling me crazy and weird! At first, I laughed too, thinking maybe they were just teasing. But then…” Her breath hitches as fresh sobs rack her tiny frame. “They turned their backs on me and said they didn’t want to be around me because I was a-a witch and was going to burn in hell!”
Anna can still hear her childlike wails echoing through the bedroom, reverberating through her consciousness like a sonic boom.
Her mother lets the storm of anguish settle before responding. She reaches into her pocket and holds up a deep black gem.
“People are a lot like these precious stones, my love,” she begins in her familiar, wise tone. “Each one is completely unique—different colors, different energies.” She rolls the deep, black rock between her palms as if weighing its significance. “Your little friends just don’t understand the magic yet. And people tend to fear what they don’t understand.”
Leaning in closer, she cradles Anna’s tear-stained face in her hands. “Right now, you’re feeling a different kind of fear than they felt when you showed them those playground rocks. Your fear comes from not understanding why they reacted the way they did.”
With infinite care, she presses the stone into Anna’s small palm, curling her daughter’s fingers around it. “This onyx stone will help shield you from that hurt while you’re at school, sweetheart. It’s one of the most powerful protection stones, absorbing and transforming any negative energy trying to drain your little light.”
Anna stares at the gemstone’s inky depths, feeling its dense vibrations resonating through her spirit.
“It will help you develop emotional and physical strength too, darling,” her mother continues. “So the next time you find yourself surrounded by stress, confusion, or grief, you just reach into your pocket and feel your stone.”
She taps a fingernail against the onyx necklace she always wears. “You see, I keep mine with me always, just for that reason.” Then with a final kiss to Anna’s forehead, her mother rises from the bed and leaves the room, leaving her daughter cradling the onyx stone in her lap.
As the mist begins swirling anew with more revelations, Anna sends a silent thank you to the ether for her mother’s profound love and wisdom—priceless gems in their own right.
