Chapter 12:
Approaching the incubator, Charles is once again struck by how incredibly small his daughter is. Staring down at her, he remembers the glow in her eyes the last time he was with her.
“Wow,” Robert says, breaking the silence, “she’s tiny.”
They stand in silence for what feels like forever, gazing at the tiny baby girl. Robert considers telling Charles about the epiphany he had last night concerning Sabrina’s grandmother’s connection to Steven Cooper, but under the weight of the moment, it seems so unimportant.
Finally, a nurse walks up to them and asks Charles who will be making the arrangements for Anna.
Charles looks over at Robert, lost and overwhelmed. Sensing his friend’s struggle, Robert quickly steps in. “I am,” he says. He takes Charles by the arm and follows the nurse, who nods and guides them to a small office. Robert answers most of the questions while Charles, exhausted and numb, stares into space.
When they are finally finished, Robert asks, “Do you want to go home with me to get some rest?”
Charles nods.
As they prepare to leave, the nurse calls out, “Oh, before you go,” she reaches behind the desk and pulls out a bag. “These are Anna’s personal effects,” she says, handing the bag to Robert along with a bottle of pills. “The doctor prescribed these for him; they will help him sleep.”
Robert takes the bag and the bottle, and they leave the hospital so that Charles can get some much-needed rest.
Once in the car, Robert reaches into his pocket, pulls out the bottle, opens it, and hands Charles a couple of pills. “Here, man, take these. The nurse said they’ll help you sleep.”
Charles takes the pills, and soon after, he drifts into a deep sleep.
“Okay, let’s go. I’m running late, and I don’t want to miss breakfast,” Anna says, heading towards the door.
Charles watches her, captivated. She wears tight blue jeans and a dark purple, bohemian-style top with sleeves that hug her arms before flaring out past her wrists. The scoop neck gathers around her chest and flows just above her hips. Her sandals click softly on the floor, and her hips sway with every step, a sight Charles always loves.
“Let me get the door for you,” he says, moving ahead to open it.
“Why, thank you, sir,” she nods, smiling as she walks past him through the open door.
He follows her out, closing the door behind him. She locks it, and they stroll toward the car. It’s a beautiful spring morning; birds sing, a gentle breeze blows, and white, billowy clouds float by.
“What a beautiful morning,” she remarks, looking up. “To match our beautiful night,” she adds, glancing over at him.
Just as they reach the car, Charles takes her in his arms and kisses her passionately. When he pulls away, he keeps her close, gazing into her eyes. “I hope you don’t mind, but I just couldn’t help myself.”
“I don’t mind at all,” she replies, enjoying the feeling of his strong arms around her. They smile at each other, and he gives her a soft kiss on the lips.
Charles opens his eyes to daylight streaming in. He quickly realizes he’s in Bo’s room, a wave of disappointment washing over him as he registers that it was all just a dream.
Bo, Robert and Sabrina’s five-year-old son, is obsessed with anything related to space. As Charles scans the room, he sees stars, planets, galaxies, and math posters decorating the walls. He chuckles through his tears, thinking about Bo’s love for astronomy—the kid is a prodigy, spouting star names and theories far beyond his years.
Wondering how long he’s been asleep, Charles reaches into his pocket for his phone. “One o’clock! How could Robert let me sleep so long?” he mutters.
He hurriedly gets up, only to sit back down as a head rush hits him. The smell of food wafts in, making his stomach growl loudly. This time, he stands up more cautiously and makes his way to the kitchen.
Robert is at the stove, cooking bacon and eggs. When he sees Charles, he greets him with a calm, “Hey there, buddy. Thought you might be hungry this afternoon.”
“My stomach’s growling, but I’m not sure if I can keep anything down,” Charles admits, sitting at the counter and burying his head in his hands.
“Well, at least give it a try. I’m not that bad of a cook,” Robert jokes, handing him a cup of coffee.
The coffee tastes like heaven, and when Robert places a plate of food in front of him, Charles devours it before he even realizes it. He’s surprised at how quickly he ate.
“Now, that’s how I wish everyone would eat my cooking,” Robert laughs, taking the plate and putting it in the sink.
“Listen,” Robert begins, “I called your office and explained everything. They told me to tell you to take as much time as you need. There’s no rush to get back to work, so please, Charles, just take your time.”
Charles nods, grateful for Robert’s help. His job, working on top-secret Artificial Intelligence projects for the Defense Department, is demanding, but he appreciates the understanding from his colleagues and the unwavering support from his friend.
Sitting on the couch, lost in thought, he reflects on how different yet complementary their lives are. Robert’s loyalty during this tough time reminds him just how lucky he is to have such a friend. 😔
Robert breaks the silence. “I called your sister and told her what happened.”
Charles looks at Robert, his gratitude evident. “Thank you.”
Charles and his sister, Sarah, were never very close. As kids, she kept to herself, always locked in her room. Being five years older, she dismissed him as a baby and rarely played with him.
But there were some nights when he’d wake up to the sound of her screaming. He’d rush into her room and try to calm her until their parents came. She suffered from terrible nosebleeds, thrashing violently in her sleep, blood staining her sheets. The memory sends a shiver through him.
Glancing around, he asks, “Where are Sabrina and Bo?”
Robert explains, “They’re out of town for an old friend’s wedding. I called her right away, and she’s on her way back now. I’ve also spoken to the funeral home about picking up Anna, so relax, buddy. We’re here for you. Do you want to take a shower and change your clothes? I put something for you to wear on the bed. Help yourself.”
“Yes,” Charles replies, “thank you so much, bro. I don’t think I could get through this without you.”
Charles takes a long, hot shower, letting his emotions flow freely. Afterward, he lays down on Robert and Sabrina’s bed, exhausted. Before he knows it, he drifts into a much-needed deep sleep.
